Would you consider AI images as art? Without “imagination” it cant be art, can it?
Apps like DALL-E regurgitate what they’ve scrapped/copied/stolen from others. Doesn’t mean it isn’t good or useful though. But where do you draw the line?
AI is new and scary and controversial just like street lamps were. But over time we realized and solved most of the problems of street lamps. Same thing will likely happen with AI.
I'm just gonna do what I do and let the problem fix itself.
No, it's not art but you could use it as a decoration. Welfare payments and social housing free the population, and one outcome is authentic art. That's never coming back
Whether it is art or not art is the wrong question and misses the HUGE point that AI is, among other now well-documented negatives, an environmental disaster. We're getting to the point now where no one can plead ignorance to the negatives, no one can say "I didn't know". After that, willfully continuing to use something that is creating a hellscape in multiple ways is just indefensible.

Most art is plagiarism in a way. It's the act of creating it is what makes it unique. So to me, it's still art. I've seen plenty of art without imagination.
When I attended Massachusetts College of Art, I was told that art is ANYTHING created by humans which elicits an emotional response. That response can be disgust, anger...in other words, negative...however, it must be created by a human to be called art.
@MrGrumpy Human imagination can enter thru the prompt though. Once upon a time photography wasn't considered art, but now it is. Even though the only human imagination is deciding where and when to click the shutter.
@ElwoodBlues I understand. Prompt engineering to create art would be like typing text in google and calling the results your research. Kinda. I think you catch my drift.
@MrGrumpy I kinda catch your drift. But if you google for something and don't get a match, google says
Your search did not match any documents
But if my prompt asks for a 3 part chimera combining obscure but existing animals then I'll get a picture, even if nobody's asked for that oddball chimera before. Not all photos are "art" by any means, and not all prompts generate something unique or imaginative. But some prompts might.
