There are some great videos on YouTube that address how plants communicate with one another, and other plants. Like when their roots touch another, unfriendly plant, they grow larger leaves to crowd out the other's sunlight.
Also some terirffic Ted Talks by Dr. Bonnie Bassler on how bacteria communicate with one another.
