Gay penguins

People say being gay is unnatural. There’s two male penguins at my local zoo who have been a happy couple for 4 years. They bring each other food, preen each other and go to sleep huddled together. Plenty of females for them to be going at, but it’s not for them.

So I guess those people are wrong. It’s decided.

Being friends does not make you gay. I have a very good friend who is male. I have a very dear friend that is my wife. I am not gay nor is my wife when she gets together with her girl friends.

@Morvoren You don't think that the zookeeper is incapable of making up a gay story to advance his/her own gay agenda? Seriously?
Morvoren · F
@hippyjoe1955 This is what happened - we went to the penguin enclosure at feeding session. The zookeeper fed each of the penguins giving their name what marking they had to identify them and their history at that zoo. There about 20 penguins.

When she came to the two male penguins she explained they were different and after a few failed attempts to pair up with females these two had courted each other and built a nesting mound together. Penguins mate for life so these two will live together for the rest of their lives.

There was another zookeeper in the enclosure doing some cleaning and taking questions and if she’d says anything wrong he would have known about it.

So there you have it.

@hippyjoe1955 There are hundreds of animals (mammals, reptiles, birds, and fish) and insects who engage in homosexual behavior and bisexual behaviors. There are scientists who have documented and studied such behavior. It's natural for them. It's natural for humans too.
Some 450+ species of animals engage in homosexual behavior. The most remarkable things about homosexuality is really that people find it remarkable enough to give people a hard time.

I had a guy here explain to me that animals only engage in homosexual behavior because they have either seen humans do it. Or have been taught it by humans.

Homosexuality and courtship rituals between same sex creatures have been observed all throughout the animal kingdom, not just in penguins. It really is just a part of the natural order of things. Now as to why it happens... who knows!

LOL. That has nothing to do with being gay. First off, you are applying human emotions and feelings to animals.
Morvoren · F
@SW-User Two males who following courtship behaviour who have paired instead of breading with females. Not gay?
SW-User
@Morvoren Not not gay. Animals mount each other just as some instinctual hormonal thing. Two males can not have sexual intercourse (vaginal), it is 100% impossible.

Chimps have been known to do the same thing. ;)
There are lots of instances in nature where animals exhibit that type of behavior. Completely free of any political agenda. 🙂

@bijouxbroussard imagine all those guys sat in the Antarctic trying to indoctrinate penguins 😂

I guess not natural as in not of use in continuation of a species through procreation.

Being Acceptable doesn't make it natural. I think that's what they are meaning.
@SW-User Natural though because it occurs in nature in over 1000 species. I would say that 'occurs commonly in nature' is a pretty good working definition of 'natural.'

@ElwoodBlues I was just trying to answer the question on why people might think that it's not natural.

Not trying to answer what I think.
Those penguins are GROOMERS and they're WOKE!!!!
They do dress well 🤷‍♂️

an animal forced to live in a cage/zoo it's entire life isn't exactly "natural" either...

especially when such animals are kept in captivity so long, that they can't even survive the wild very long if/when they're released
Unlearn · 41-45, M
Maybe it's just bromance...
Morvoren · F
@Unlearn I dunno. They built a nesting mound.

@Morvoren So What Do You Think Of Jason Momoa & Would You Do Him
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
And you think they're "gay" because?
@MartinTheFirst They exhibit all the standard mating behaviors. Homosexual behavior is common in many animal species.

In 1910, a team of scientists set off on the Terra Nova Expedition to explore Antarctica. Among them was George Murray Levick, a zoologist and photographer who would be the first researcher to study the world's largest Adélie penguin colony. He chronicled the animals' daily activities in great detail.

In his notebooks, he described their sexual behaviour, including sex between male birds. However, none of these notes would appear in Levick's published papers. Concerned by the graphic content, he only printed 100 copies of Sexual Habits of the Adélie Penguin to circulate privately. The last remaining copy was recently unearthed providing valuable insights into animal homosexuality research.

Same-sex behaviour ranging from co-parenting to sex has been observed in over 1,000 species with likely many more as researchers begin to look for the behaviour explicitly. Homosexuality is widespread, with bisexuality even more prevalent across species.
