Tasmanian Tiger back from the dead!

They're Jurassic Park-ing the Tasmanian Tiger and bring it back from the dead! (or so they're at least trying to)
[media=https://youtu.be/QlKBwYcjbmE]
We have over population of species ?...
...more like we are ripping down our forests too fast.

I havent seen this is our local news at all. And they have been talking about this for years.

Also, our only meat eating species we have now is a scavenger: The Tasmanian Devil, and its on the verge of extinction because of a cancerous facial tumor disease, prolly caused by poisons man released into the wild to deal with a fox invasion - which didnt work.

And why release a 'bought back species' into a diseased environment ? Itd have no immune resistance to a modern pathogen.

I think this guy is grandiosing an idea thats been on the table for a while.

I mean, itd be great to have it back , but you can be sure it wouldn't be released back into the wild for years untill they had a base population in captivity.
And even then, itd have to be released on to a reserve to be observed to watch its impact .

Our fauna has adapeted for years without it.
As nice as it would be to see it back, itd have the potential to wipe out other species who have adapted habits free from predators.

Thanks for showing me this 🤗. Ill have to dig around locally and see if this has any weight to being a near future reality.

@OogieBoogie All he's really saying new is that they got $5 million dollars, which is the start... as you know they wouldn't do it without money.

In general, I like this guy, but I do believe his ideas are grandiose, like one small change can make this massive bigger change...

As far as the disease stuff, my understanding (which could be wrong) is that their theory (which could also be wrong) is that a large reason Tasmanian Devil and other creatures have the diseases like the cancerous facial tumor disease is because of their overpopulation and no predator is keeping them in check... so disease is keeping them in check....

Where if you had a predator, then it would be survival of the fittest, and less Tasmanian Devil with cancerous facial tumor disease would survive to pass it onto their children, and therefore making them more fit and less diseased.

I'm not saying it's correct, but just that I believe that is some people's logic.
@Viper umm, how can i say this ?

The devil had a stable population as its just a scavenger...it doesn't hunt .

And the disease didnt start happening till after the 1080 baiting went out.

Devil numbers got so low , we now have reserve breeding programs across Australia for them.

I think information gets simplified as it travels and people extrapolate on it without going back to the source.

The facial tumour disease nearly wiped them out. Its not an overpopulation thing.
If it was , it would have stabilised itself .
@Viper the real truth is they never tracked down the cause. But they do think it was prolly inroduced by mankind in some way: farmers pesticides , 1080, maybe even a tourist bushwalker bought it in.

Devils are our bush trashmen. They keep it clean of carcasses. They eat nearly anything.
Most farmers have a devil pit where they throw dead stock .
So it could even have been a dead stock animal that started it.

We dont really know 🤷‍♀️

They've been talking about doing that for decades tho 👀

@Fishy Well, now they have $5 million dollars to do so... and they'll probably throw more money after that.
