My Mediterranean gecko has never had that happened yet. Im always nervous I'm going to startle him when im trying to move him into a temporary aquarium so i can clean his big one and he'll drop his tail. I know it won't hurt him. But it does have a lot of fat reserves and he's a picky eater

it's typically a fear or stress response. more common in younger geckos. they might look a bit sorry for themselves a lil while but they recover fine.

I was always so scared ours would lose his tail, That would have made me so uncomfortable for the lil guy.
