Gil Scott Heron, "Angel Dust" (1978)

He wrote songs about his own struggles with addiction…
today I had a long talk with a family member (whom I still love dearly) and her problems. She’s been clean for 6 mos and I am very proud of her. After our talk I felt closer to her than I had in literally years.
She’s going to continue to put in her complete effort and I plan to be there for her (without judgment) when needed.

I applaud your relative for the courage she has shown in confronting her problem, and I applaud you for supporting her.

I am a member of a 12-step group. I have come to the conclusion that an addiction can be an invitation to engage in honest self reflection and to embrace life in a deep, meaningful way, to an extent that most people never experience. And I think the closeness you felt after your conversation is a sign of that.

It sounds beautiful.
