Gil Scott Heron, "Angel Dust" (1978)

He wrote songs about his own struggles with addiction…
today I had a long talk with a family member (whom I still love dearly) and her problems. She’s been clean for 6 mos and I am very proud of her. After our talk I felt closer to her than I had in literally years.
She’s going to continue to put in her complete effort and I plan to be there for her (without judgment) when needed.

I applaud your relative for the courage she has shown in confronting her problem, and I applaud you for supporting her.

I am a member of a 12-step group. I have come to the conclusion that an addiction can be an invitation to engage in honest self reflection and to embrace life in a deep, meaningful way, to an extent that most people never experience. And I think the closeness you felt after your conversation is a sign of that.

It sounds beautiful.

That sounds like some really nice progress and strengthening for you and your loved one. I wish only the best continued success.

I have at least one of his albums. He was doing rap before that term existed. An underrated musician and poet.

I’m glad your family member is clean and that she has you for support. It is a miserable disease.

Good for her. I've had my own struggles in that arena and know for me it was the hardest thing I ever had to face and go through.
@Mamapolo2016 I’m actually optimistic for the first time in a long, long time.
@bijouxbroussard I meant the song. Your loved one's 6 mos sober is wonderful!
