It's all about the money. If you are too wasted to work or to do your job properly and efficiently, they can't make money. If you cost them money, then they can't pay you your wages. So it all makes sense and works out.

@SW-User mainly because if they just fire you outright without a test, they have no proof and that could result in a lot of legal issues

@SW-User when a company fires someone, they want the reason well documented. It isn't enough to just say your work has slipped or is lacking. They document why. They can't just say you were acting intoxicated, they need proof.
