What's driving me mental these days is the attitude that ALL disabled people can work.
Sure, many disabled people can and do work - but you can't blanket claim that every disabled person can and should work.
Some are struggling to just do the basic things that so many people take for granted being able to do - like to make and drink a hot cup of tea or coffee without spilling it or breaking the mug.

@HootyTheNightOwl I know there are some people who are disabled and can't work I used to work with some of them.
You do, but it's still become a point of toxic positivity in some countries, with disabled people being forced to jump through hoops of having medical advice ignored in an attempt to get them into work - regardless of if this work actually kills them.

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout maybe they sure don't like reality so they think they can wish it away

I more than understand. I don’t say much around people. I know what it feels like to be a “negative” person. It hurts when people lack understanding. It hurts to be the person who just wants to be understood. I don’t find many people these days that I can connect with. Most have no idea how to relate. It’s lonely.
I'm sick of fake empathy and phoney compassion and yes toxic positivity

@Chern0bylplaygr0unds yes ,some people mean well, but most of them don't take you to task if you tell them what they said was hurtful to you if they are truly compassionate and kind.
Because they are kind they do not wish to cause pain to someone else even unintentional.
Toxic people get angry, because their advice hasn't been taken which is more important to them than comforting someone else.

@Justmeraeagain understood ... sometimes it's hard to tell people who mean well what would help when we don't even know . I have a friend who is going through a rough time and I'm just giving her space and letting her know I'm here for her ...that there is no pressure to talk.

I have never come across the term "toxic positivity" before. Is this linked with conservatives who think empathy is a weakness?
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
@SunshineGirl I am a conservative and I do not believe that empathy is a weakness.
I'm talking about people who tell you to calm down not to cry everything's going to be okay when you just had trauma that to me is toxic positivity

@Justmeraeagain That seems to imply a lack of empathy/understanding.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
@SunshineGirl it does, but it is wrapped up in you should be positive , you shouldn't be sad your husband died, etc.
I don't think it is a political thing necessarily it's a lack of empathy thing.
