My point is to stress the types of escalation can varie from the current point. No matter what the current level is. The intent is an escalation.

Kids even do this playfully. Say wrestling. After saying that they will wrestle harder.

Being literal doesn't help the understanding of this "INTENT". 😊

A tickling fight could even be the reason for the statement "Now you are asking for it".

I agree with others… it could mean any number of things depending on context.. but definitely escalation.
