How to Open a Door

This is a basic and easy-to-understand tutorial on how to open a door. By the time you're finished reading this post, you should have all the knowledge you need to perform the action of opening a door.

First, let's look at what a door is and what function it serves. Doors are described as movable barriers that allow for access in and out of an enclosure. They're also known as doorways or portals. A door's primary purpose is to provide a means of security by controlling access to an enclosure as well as maintaining a degree of privacy by having it closed. Doors can be made out of a number of materials such as wood, metal or glass. But the material of the door usually varies depending on what the door is placed for.

Now that you know what exactly a door is and what purpose it serves, it's time you learn how to open one. Let's say you're walking along the street and need to enter a building, but the door to the entrance is shut, thus preventingyou from doing so. Not worry, that's where this post comes in. A near-universal aspect of every door is that it has a handle to open the door it is attached to. These typicallycome in the form of literal handles or knobs, which themselves can take on a variety of different designs, but right now, we'll be looking at the most common type of door handle there is: the lever latch.

To open a door with a lever latch handle, you must grasp the handle with your hand and then push the handle down. The door handle has a spindle running through it which is connected to a cylinder or tumbler that sits right below the spindle. Turning the handle pulls the cylinder in the direction it is turned. At the end of the cylinder is the latch or bolt which is lodged in a space carved out in the doorframe parallel to the door handle. That latch/bolt is what prevents the door from being opened if the handle is not turned. However, pushing the door handle down will rotate the spindle that sits above the cylinder, operating the cylinder mechanism inside the handle, thus allowing it to be opened.

Once you have done this, congratulations! You have successfully opened a door! With nothing blocking your way anymore, entering that building shouldn't be any trouble. But this only covers the most common type of door handle. Other door handles can be more or less difficult to open than the lever latch. Some door handles only require you to pull or push open, while others require you to press down on a separate latch above the handle with your thumb to open. Then there's always the possibility that certain doors may be locked, preventing them from being opened by normal means. Such doors require a key in order to unlock them, that within itself being another simple but also complex topic we won't have time to cover in this post.
