I Hate The Mainstream Media

Left wing bias in the media. Before, it seems that that claim was mostly the right just whining about not getting their way with the media promoting societal progressivism, apart from maybe a few isolated cases where they might have had an actual point. But now they’re finally right about it! It seems the media has been more biased than ever in recent years, being so blatant about it that it’s an insult to people’s intelligence.

I think it's important to recognize the difference between bias and untruth. Bias is not synonymous with untruth, it's the injection of opinion into reporting. To say "That stupid Trump went to China" and "Trump went to China" are getting the same truth across, that Trump went to China, one is just injecting opinion into it. Of course they're often more surreptitious than that and maybe no opinion is easily detectable: "A man was arrested" and "a black man was arrested" could both be biased depending on the source (one deliberately including the race, one deliberately hiding it!)

If you can detect the bias, you can glean the truth (as if it were being put through a sieve). Of course we shouldn't have to do that, but that's the reality. If I want opinion, I'll read an editorial.

The way the media reports is a product of a vicious cycle. People want their own opinions reinforced, so the media gives them what they want. We want to be told "your side is right, the other side is pure evil". But they want it because it's all they've ever known, from the media, et al. We tend not to see bias when we agree with it. But I'm at the point where even if I agree with the bias, I don't want to see it. It's like you said, insulting to my intelligence. I don't want things omitted and twisted to fit my preconception of the world.
