How do you deal with a coworker that is constantly complaining?

They are very emotional and in their mind...everything’s stupid, everything sucks and every task or discussion is pointless. Am I just dealing with a depressed person?

Say to them,"Life is as good as you choose to make it."

If that doesn't work, say to them,"Life is a quivering cesspool of doom and despair, but all things considered, it still beats the alternative."

If that doesn't work, say to them,"Whatever. You wanna buy a monkey?"

We all can be like that! But yeah sounds like they really dont like the job anymore
@Beautywithin thanks I never even thought of that, but it makes sense...they just don’t like what they do anymore.

@DecafD I say it from experience in the past when I have come to dislike my job I did tend to be negative

Ignore and avoid as much as possible

sounds like it but if they do their job just put up with it coworkers don't have to be friends.
@texasdaddydom yeah I’m putting up with it the best I can. I just wish there was less of an emotional response when I ask for things. I’m not mean and really try to motivate and develop this person, but it’s hitting a brick wall now.

@DecafD agreed bad for morale and they have to want to change to change.I would not suggest trying to improve them as you said co-worker unless you become management over them not your problem. I can not think of a polite way to say cut the emo crap crybaby maybe you will have better luck.
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
Just avoid them if possible. Negative people like that tend to just want attention because they want people to feel bad for them.
@GuyWithOpinions true. I guess I’m just stuck trying to understand why this person is so miserable. The team is nice to her and likes her, I never give her more than she can handle and the tasks are not complicated, we are always grateful for what she does and she still is unhappy.

Offer to update their CV so they can apply for other jobs and leave.

Try not to absorb it..ignore it the best you can..maybe put on some music and focus on that instead, it can truly drain you if you let it!
@SW-User you’re right bc it does drain me at times!

@DecafD I am the same, I get sucked in and I want to "help" them figure it all out, give solutions, but some people cannot be helped, they have to help themselves especially someone depressed, they could need a dr or medication.

Some people just like to complain constantly.

Wait till they have a spider on their back and use it as pretext to beat them silly 👌🏿
BlueVeins · 22-25
@DecafD I've done it before and it's absolutely wonderful. 🥰
@BlueVeins Lol did the person thank you for saving their life?
BlueVeins · 22-25
@DecafD No! 💖 But I didn't get in trouble.
Mordi · 31-35, M
Meth in their coffee. 😒
Bratt · F
So I'm assuming "throat punching" by definition in frowned upon by management?
@Bratt hahaha yes, then I’d be the one complaining. Complainant about how I lost my job.
