I Am Going to Say Something Controversial

Has anything really relevant for mankind been discovered in the last years? I do not think so. And I think it happens because it is not profitable any longer.

Big money does not go to real economy any more. Big business is not there. Big business is in financial speculation, in managing people's perceptions and opinions through media and entertanment, in big data trafficking of personal information. These are good times to sell smoke.

Some of it's been discovered then quietly hidden away. Why should the battery companies want a better battery out there that lasts longer or holds more when they sell them by the cell? In software there have been lots of developments but you don't get to see it very easily. Some things like hard drives have had lots of discoveries that allow data to be compressedore and more. Even in cooking there are discoveries. Mirror cakes didn't exist a couple years ago.

@Tastyfrzz If discovered but not made available, they are not really useful. And yes, the reason is again money.
A very good point ... since 1992 ... the advances correllated to population growth ... have shown a dramatic fall.

Today we call things invented in 1902 "new" ... just because nobody knows history.

your theory has great merit ... since few inventions ever arose from inside large corporations ... 99.8% arose from humble starts ... and large business stymies humble

@questionWeaver These small businesses need support. And low taxes,
Exactly
I get what you're saying. The answer is yes! The big corporations want the whole cake, even the leftovers. On the other hand, there are some small scale breakthrough inventions known but hardly accessible to public every now and then.
There are scientific and technological breakthroughs happening all the time. American society at least is largely scientifically illiterate. These things don't interest people any more. And they only interest business as far as the next quarter goes.

Not really. When will we have flying cars? I wonder.
Cierzo · M
@novembermoon Probably never 😕. But on the other side we may have soon a new Windows system or Facebook update where you cannot write on the screen not-PC thoughts

@SW-User I thought so. I thought at these time everyone could have an affordable home, but that will mean less profit for banks. Not a good idea

@MrBrownstone A.I is still in its early stage,I think, with not many practical developments and a lot of ethical concerns
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@Cierzo You better research A.I. then.
Not a fan of space related sciences, huh?
Cierzo · M
@EllaDisenchanted No, but are they relevant today? They may be one day if we need to leave a destroyed planet, but even then, will more than 0,01% of all the Earth population do it?
@Cierzo A huge amount of medical information and treatments have come from space sciences.

How do you define relevant?
Cierzo · M
@Northwest Something that has changed the lives of many people. Like planes, television, computer, internet.
Northwest · M
@Cierzo I think that we have things that are changing our lives, on regular basis. Some are small and some are big. In the aggregate, change is visible. It's also different, for different parts of the world.

In the US, 10 years ago, we used to have bookstores. For the most part, we no longer do.

Two years ago, no one would dream of putting listening devices in their homes, multiple rooms, listening to every single word they say, interpreting it, and acting on it. It's called Alexa, and now Apple and Google have similar devices. Microsoft may have an offering as well. It's changing everything about us and our lives.

Virtual Reality / Augmented Reality. They are not the same, but they share a lot of common tools. Their effect has not been noticeable (yet) outside the gaming and other specialized communities, but these technologies are changing to alter our lives in ways that we've only begun to understand.

AI, not what's commonly known as AI today. That's simply sophisticated analytical, methods, applied to large data sets. Real AI is on the drawing board now, and it will have the most profound effect on our lives, since the internal combustion engine.

Custom tailored, individualized, DNA based cure. The first applications are starting to emerge. This is as significant to the combination of penicillin and XRay technologies, back in the day.

Nano technology - applications and ways it's changing our lives, are too numerous to count.

Materials science / rocket / space technologies. Today, is the historical equivalent of October 1492. Within 100 years, we will have 1M humans who call Mars home.

This is just off the top of my head.
Cierzo · M
@Northwest These thing you say have no presence at all in 99% of human lives. In the future they may be have it, but now only those who move in circles with very close relationships with science and technology are familiar with them. That's what I see,a huge gap between theoretical inventions, and everyday life practical use of them.

What utter nonsense
Cierzo · M
@AnneHoney Why? What evidence otherwise you have?
AnneHoney · 36-40, F
You smoked too much already. Must be the cause of your ignorance.
