Best way to get knots out of hair?

After being sick and primarily bed ridden for months, my hair is full of knots. The last time I tried to get the knots out, it was pretty painful and I wound up cutting them out with a scissors.

If necessary, I will just cut the knots out, then go to a hair salon and get my hair cut short in layers. That might be my answer. But...does anyone here have any ideas or techniques for dealing with extreme hair knots?

Tons of conditioner. This may sound like an advertisement, but Suave Almond Shae Butter (cheap too) will do the trick.

I haven't had a haircut in over a year and that's happening to me too. Conditioner it is.
Conditioner, more conditioner, use a wide tooth comb starting at the bottom, work your way up
@CereBellum nope, still curly though
@CereBellum yes, still have a beard 👍😉
Cut it off.

I had long hair for most of my life. With it came the daily hassle of combing and having to keep it plaited or in a tail to minimise knots. Every week, I shampooed, used conditioner, and combed while wet - no hair drier because it leads to splits ends.

A year ago, I cut it off with a number nine attachment on Braun shearers. It turned out to be a liberation - an extra four and a half hours a week to do more creative and interesting things with my life. The pleasure of feeling the wind against my scalp in summer is delicious. And the feel of running my fingers through the hair exquisite. I'd never known what I was missing.
Warm shower and a new bottle of slimy conditioner. Slather the conditioner in and start unraveling from the bottom up, add a little water or conditioner, when needed. It takes a while...

I use my fingers in the morning, and then, after my shower and washing my hair with shampoo and detangling conditioner, I put in a leave in silicone based conditioner, and then I comb it out with a coarse hair detangling brush I bought at Bed, Bath and Beyond. You use the coarse brush even if you have fine hair, because there might still be tangles, and the bristles are farther apart.

Once my hair is dry, I use the fine hair detangling brush, and brush it out.

Put a really good treatment on, wrap your hair in cling film and heat it with a hairdryer for 10 mins, leave for a bit the then comb it through slowly... section by section.

Lots of conditioner then brush through.

Try a hair mask.

Put something slippery in your hair such as V05 Oil treatment ( pretty cheap at Walgreens.) Or Conditioner

Put a towel over your shoulders because you may need some time to very gently work your fingers thru your hair.
You have to be very patient.
You can also use a wide tooth comb to assist but you have to very slowly start from the edges of where the knot is.
Do not yank on the knot from the top with the comb.
I don’t know how long your hair is, but I’ve also been using conditioner and using my comb, holding a section at a time and combing to the ends.
