Use the potato option if you have it but put it in a bowl half filled with water.
What the water does is help prevent dehydration.
No potato option? Try the veggie option but 1.5 times as long.
One medium size potato takes around 15 minutes with 1000 watt microwave.

@SW-User Many microwaves now have potato or veggie options. They alternate between high and low powers so they do not need to be poked like some have mentioned.
Doing your way works as well yet is more time consuming. You have to watch it and carefully time it or it will explode.

Generally, treat it like steaming. When I've part-cooked potatoes in the microwave, I do the same as when I'm boiling them. I return to them frequantly and put a fork in to see how soft they've become. With a microwave, you need to do this once every minute.
If you are going to make a bake or a dauphinoise, I wouldn't bother microwaving the potatoes. If you cut them thin enough, they shouldn't need any cooking other than the baking.

Put water in the bottom of a bowl and put a lid on top. Don’t seal it just lay something on top so it can steam cook. Try 5 - 8 minutes and check it.

Potato is one of the few food to taste different nuked. Stab through the middle, cover and don't cook longer than 5 minutes at a go.

I stab mine with a fork 3 or 4 times and then turn it over half way thru cooking. I don't cover it with anything.

I've always wanted too, but i make eggs and other things explode so i've been reluctant to try.

I put mine in the oven.

Stab it with a fork to vent, place it on a micro safe plate, nuke it for 8-12 minutes on high (depends on your oven’s wattage). Turn it over midway through.
