Is there a trick to cooking potato in the microwave?

I'm thinking of cooking some in the microwave before using it in a potato bake. But I have never used the microwave for potato before...

Generally, treat it like steaming. When I've part-cooked potatoes in the microwave, I do the same as when I'm boiling them. I return to them frequantly and put a fork in to see how soft they've become. With a microwave, you need to do this once every minute.

If you are going to make a bake or a dauphinoise, I wouldn't bother microwaving the potatoes. If you cut them thin enough, they shouldn't need any cooking other than the baking.
