I Support Body Positivity

I always wonder why we need a body positive reminder. When did we on mass feel this way? are we conditioned to feel bad about ourselves so we can spend more on beauty products?

But who are we comparing ourselves to? A distorted reality that's what.

I enjoy photography as a hobby, hence my username of Shutterbug. I've have had a shot quite a few models in the last few years and i will tell you, they have all the insecurities and hang ups as everyone else. Trust me i have heard them all.

But a model has the advantage of a hair and make up artist, stylist, have been coached, and then you have the photographer and retoucher!

A good make up artist will bring out the real beauty in someone, without overdoing. Its amazing what they can achieve. I try to get one on board for all shoots where i can.

Photographer knows the right light, angles, depth of field to maximise the look. Then the retouching (photoshop). I can remove or reduce blemishes, wrinkles, veins, lines, soften lips, fix red eyes, remove grey hairs, remove tan lines, fix skin colour, remove skin redness, fix dry skin, brighten eyes, and though i don't do it often make sight adjustments to body shapes. And all still looks fully natural!

So when you look at your mirror selfies, don't compare yourself with a model, they have had a lot of help from a lot of people! :)

Ok we have snapchat filters now. And yes they can make your skin look smoother, your eyes brighter with the added benefit of dog ears, but its fake as.

So don't compare yourself with the distorted reality. Just love yourself and enjoy!

But if you ever do have the chance do a shoot, the full treatment, do it! You wont regret it!
I enjoyed your post and it's true with all the technology, cosmetics and beauty products, one can achieve almost absolute perfection in front of a camera.. Today's standards have had an adverse effect on youth.

Really sad when you stop and think of it. Were all different shapes, sizes and heights. Kids end up with distorted views of their appearance because of social media and people in the fashion industry saying you've got to look a certain way, primarily thin.

I used to be almost ashamed of having curves. My friends in school didn't develop as quickly as I did and I was different because how I looked. Guys would tease me unmercifully and girls were jealous.

I've seen too many kids go to CHEO to the eating disorders clinic because of their self image. Acceptance is the key and when people can learn to embrace who they are and realize that they're all kinds of beauty, thats the objective to being happy with yourself and loving who you are.
@Shutterbug Thank you, you're always so kind. I'm not sure who sets the standards today. Kids are very impressionable and seem to be affected and influenced by everything around them. Social media and whoever is the flavour of the week or month can initiate that as well. My Mom had an expression when I was growing up " Monkey see, monkey do." It's still the same I guess unfortunately.

@sensualbeauty1 impressionable....that's the word I was looking for. Hadn't had my coffee then.

I am glad we missed all that.
@Shutterbug Yes I was too busy going to the beach everyday as a kid, taking swimming lessons and playing in the sand. Didn't have time nor the inclination to worry about my looks or body. The boys did enough looking and pulling on my braids. 馃槉

Personally I don't need the reminder nor do I feel that way. Not as a full grown adult woman. I keep my fitness level and weight to my own standards of what I like for myself and what feels good to me.

I don't relate to this obsession with it all.

Nice post!
MagentaF
@Shutterbug Thanks. :-)
Please don't misunderstand though. I'm sure I've had those feelings at times and compared myself, it's human nature. But I've been highly aware for a while now, of all the falseness and the facade portrayed in those airbrushed photos and all the commercials and advertising that display some fake idealism. I am not fooled by it nor do I play into it. So I don't need the validation. I'm validated by being a soul, a human, naturally.

@Magenta I think it's hard for people to engage in that thought process. To say it's not real, or distorted. So having that inner thought is a credit to you. :)

I think many lack an awareness and a realistic view or seeing it for how it truly is. It's easier to look at the surface than the underlying, the deeper. 馃挏

This is the epitome of body positivity though.
To encourage people to feel proud, to not feel shame, to recognize that we all have issues and insecurities.....and to simply love and accept ourselves no matter our size or shape.....we are all beautiful and special.

Great post, from someone who gets to see 'behind the scenes' of the beauty industry, as it were.

@ImpeccablyImperfect you should feel confident of who you are. It's our diversity that makes us unique. :)

I hope you got something out of the thread. You did embrace it! :)

As you get older, you have to accept that you won鈥檛 look like you did 30 years ago. That can be a tough pill to swallow. But if you let yourself have the feelings, some form of acceptance usually comes. And then you start to see some of the good things about aging. (Example: I don鈥檛 wear clothes I don鈥檛 like, just because they鈥檙e in style.)
Shutterbug56-60, M
@SmartKat clothes in style are usually uncomfortable! :)

But acceptance will bring contentment and happiness?
SmartKat56-60, F
@Shutterbug Not at first, and it鈥檚 kind of off-and-on. At least, in my experience. Getting older sucks, but the other option is death, and I鈥檓 not ready for that yet. So, I have to learn how to be an older woman.

Sometimes none of the choices are very good.

Filters annoy me. The only filter I ever use is the one which makes a pic black and white, because I think those look quite vintage
Shutterbug56-60, M
@BeefySenpie filters look cheap to me. Some are just fun of course.
Dusty101F
Thankfully I never went to that place to feel where I compare myself to others. I'm comfortable enough.. Phew!
And I don't use snapchat filters as my eyes look rather large I tell you!
Large!
Great post by the way! 馃榿

@Shutterbug I'll pm you a copy of my drivers licence!

@Dusty101 hmmm.....how do we know it's real? 馃

Well said.... it鈥檚 also a shame if the person who views your photo thinks you鈥檝e edited it to the point of being unbelievable. That鈥檚 not cool either.... some people are very photogenic without the need for snap chat or bugsy ears lol 馃惏
Shutterbug56-60, M
@SW-User my retouching style is natural. I don't like to change people. I tend to focus on things that distract and lighten them .... but many over process.

I don't know bunny ears can be cool! :)
SW-User
@Shutterbug the bunny ears STAY lol 馃槀馃槉馃憤

This is a wonderful sentiment. And i agree totally, having gone through the whole process, and discovered my morals are more important.

But not all aspects of physiognomy can be overlooked . Being teased is one thing, being outcast is another. And when this happens, even when you are at peace with yourself, its hard to cope the revulsion other people feel when they look at you . And its an amazing eye opener to social culture....so much is dependent on visual standards.

There is so much more to a human being.....but the shame is.....if your appearance averts people, they will never get the chance to learn of them.

It's why i love this place.....you can get to show your inner self....the one that really matters.
