I Think Age Is Only A Number

[big]Omg no!!! [/big]

Age matters. Did any of you watch the Bachelor tonight? Bekah finally told us how old she is. 22. Yup, 22 years old.

And Arie (remember him?) is 36. Yup, 14 years older than her.

So when she revealed her age, he realized how silly it was and sent her home, right? Nope!!! He talked about how he sees the possibility of a real future with her!

What do you think? Is age just a number? Or does it matter?

Ah. 14 years at that age seems significant.
But many years on, it matters so much less
@mathsman Well of course. That's my whole point in the discussion here.

Big difference between 22 and 36.
Not so big between 32 & 46.
No difference at all between 42 & 56.

@IAmJess So, they should look ahead too.
@mathsman That's not the point.

@IAmJess I so agree.
I think they should make their own decisions.
They won't be told it's a mistake
@mathsman Of course they make their own decisions. And last week she had a really immature moment, he saw it for what it was, and sent her home. I rest my case. It was silly from the beginning.

@IAmJess
You're trying to make a case?
Prove you're right, lol
So many other age-gap relationships that do work.
@mathsman Yup. But this was silly from the start. She was there playing around, having fun, no future plans or intents. Totally normal for 22.

He's there tired of all the games in life and ready to find a serious woman and get married. Totally normal for 36.

That's my point.

@IAmJess I'm not so sure as you that there is a "normal" for everyone.
It's common for wealthy older guys to marry a very much younger girl.
Is that abnormal?
@mathsman I didn't mean "normal" in the judgmental way. I meant normal as in within one standard deviation of the norm. Everything has a norm.

For a 22 year old, it is completely within the norm to be carefree and directionless. As it is for me at 18.

For a 36 year old, it is completely within the norm to be more serious about life and wanting to settle down.

And yes, it is quite normal for wealthy older men to marry younger women. That kinda proves my point. When did you last see that young hottie marry that old guy from the trailer park? If age gap relationships were truly about attraction, they wouldn't be so closely correlated with wealth.
mathsman · 70-79, M
@IAmJess But what you see and "know" are not necessarily accurate data.
Do you know the age-gap profiles for all liaisons/marriages for any ages?
You're mostly responding to media-portrayals of what the editorial team deem to be likely to make them a profit, lol.
@mathsman In your vast years of experience, have you ever known a young hottie (25 or less) to marry and old guy (50 or over) who lived in a trailer and was broke?
mathsman · 70-79, M
@IAmJess That's on TV, not reality.
It's made to provoke you - it succeeded, lol
@mathsman No, I'm asking you in your vast years of real life, have you ever seen it? Have you ever seen a young hottie (25 or less) marry and old guy (50 or over) who lived in a trailer and was broke?
