I Am Spanish

German, French and Dutch governments have shown their support to the Spanish government in their defense of the constitutional order.

Meanwhile, British government is silent, and opposition leader Corbyn looks outraged by police keeping law and order. Not to mention how most British media deal with the issue and the sympathy they show with Catalonian independence.

It looks like the UK wants to pubish the EU using Spain as the boxing bag.

I don't forget, many Spaniards don't either, and hope our government do not either. Sadly, the latter is hard to happen with our coward weak government.

Edit: British government has shown their support too. Thank you Mrs.May. FU Mr. Corbyn.

It would be interesting to see how many are really for secession. Logically, I would think that the majority would think separating from Spain is a move in the wrong direction. This is like the Flemish in Belgium, who continuously make noises about separating from their "lazy" southern co-patriots.

@dunpender Catalonia pays more taxes because they are more developed and wealthier. I guess this is what the left supports.
And now some people who call themselves leftist support their independence.

Actually the British FO side with the spanish Government.

Statement reads
"The referendum is a matter for the Spanish government and people. We want to see Spanish law and the Spanish constitution respected and the rule of law upheld. Spain is a close ally and a good friend, whose strength and unity matter to us."

@Cierzo As in Scotland, the separatists do make a disproportionate amount of noise. Their support is far from 100% even in Catalonia.
The sight of heavily armed officers pulling unarmed civilians by the hair is an unfortunate propaganda gift to them, a lesson the Uk learnt in Northern Ireland.

It's about EU politics, guess you know that as well 😉
Cierzo · M
@SW-User It was not smart, but people knew they were doing something illegal. And I wonder why those who criticise Spanish police never criticise Catalonian police, who are as or even more brutal. There are dozens of videos of their 'deeds' in google, beating people during sit-ins
SW-User
@Cierzo I didn't see them indeed, but I know Catalonia's government isn't exactly an angel collection indeed.
Cierzo · M
@SW-User They are as corrupt and greedy as their Spanish counterparts. And cunning. Politicians now in the independence wagon were against it years ago. They just want more money and power

@dunpender Spanish Home Office talks of more than injured policemen.
People who went there to vote knew they were doing something illegal

I don't think it is anything to do with the EU. If there is sympathy it is because of how the UK has dealt with Scottish independence recently. The actions of the Catalan government were unconstitutional, but the actions of the Spanish government in using police force to close polling stations were undemocratic and disproportionate 😟
Cierzo · M
@TammieBear Those people were doing something illegal. Also Catalonian police have a reputation of being very brute.

Catalonian police in 2011. I wish all the media who talk so much about the brutal Spanish police would show these images too

@tupolevtu144 Both will be, but Catalonia even more. They will be out of the EU and euro, and their new currency would be strongly devualuated.
Cierzo · M
@dunpender If it was up to me, I would not only give them the independence, but cut diplomatic ties. But Spain imposes the conditions, not them
ringtaster · 61-69, M
Our? You're Spanish. Bye bye EU. 40 Years of pandering over. Happy days
Cierzo · M
@ringtaster Good luck with UKistan
ringtaster · 61-69, M
Sure thing. Coming here from your shithole of a land and France. No more
Cierzo · M
@ringtaster And Heathrow by thousands every day. It is a pity a wall cannot be built on the sea to isolate your cesspool island.

On the matter of the Constitution, is there any truth in the suggestion that it has changed to be less favourable to Catalonia in recent years.
Cierzo · M
@malizz Spanish constitution has only been changed since its approval in 1978, and it had to do with national debt, not with territorial matters

@dunpender We will see. They don't deserve independence, they deserve being expelled, kicked in the ass.

@dunpender Catalans were already infuriated. Now Spaniards are too. These morning I have heard colleagues who are against all violence say they understand what police did. We are fed up with Catalan arrogance.

About the 'developed' world...

Annab · 61-69, T
Some of the reports in UK suggests the Spanish have handled it really badly.
Cierzo · M
@Annab Not in a smart way, for sure.
Annab · 61-69, T
@Cierzo well some reports here said that local Spanish police and firemen were forming lines to stop the national police from attacking catalan public. If that's true in any form it seems very bad - Corbyn is a pacifist so will always make comment against the aggresors

@dunpender Even if they join EFTA, they would have a very devaluated currency instead of euro.
