I Am A Humanist

I am a Christian and a Humanist. In other words I believe in a world without presuming the existence of a god but I also believe that the teachings of Jesus set out a philosophy of life and ethical values that I have chosen as a guide for my life.

For those for whom belief in a god is not possible. that is a way to live ethically and responsibly. It is an arbitrary choice, as is any ethical choice, but it is the one I have made.

I am tired of hearing fundamentalist Christians say such nonsense that there cannot be any human values without accepting the idea of a god, and that their way is the only way. Why they are unwilling to say that their view is a choice, just as my view is a choice, is what makes their view unpalatable to me and many.

If anyone cares about that idea, try my website: www.christianhumanist.net

Anyways, I looked at your site and have concluded that you represent naturalistic pantheism: a means of enticing the pre-Buddhist (spiritualist) crowd while maintaining roots in pessimistic skepticism. It's not some overt attempt to meet Christianity halfway or somehow draw Christians away from Christianity at all. It's an attempt to draw those in limbo towards the simpler form of atheism. These attempts to represent middle ground without conceding anything typically fare poorly, and are just polar propaganda. Christian apologists do the same thing- but from the other side; this goodwill ambassadorship.

Still, the idea of scrapping God while retaining the idea of reciprocity is sound. I can applaud you on getting this much right.

@Humanist321: It's most unfortunate that you take this stance of denouncing what you know nothing about. And I not only have a doctorate in education but have specialized in relevant aspects of religion, philosophy, psychology and science. You, on the other hand are just stripping down Christianity as an atheist might prefer it to be regarded. You say very little of worth yet manage to fill books. I really hate it when old, blowhard know-littles speak to me like this. Yet I first went onto your post, so I'll go elsewhere.

@Humanist321: I liked the xmas reference. You seem more relaxed than the other persons commenting here heh.
@lucyrocks.... wow, pretty hostile and full of pomposity and arrogance for someone of your tender years and little experience. You have a doctorate in education? Gheez, that's impressive. You haven't read any of my books and you have not done any critical reviews of them but you call me a "know little"? I told you that your comments about MY VIEWS are wrong--you did not have a clue what my views are or you would not have made those comments. I said nothing about your views, whatever they are. Your comments are not relevant, not useful, and not accurate.

Interesting. Yet how does one follow the teachings of Jesus while rejecting everything he believed in regards to God? Reciprocity is a good concept that kind of reflects his mind set, yet even this idea cannot be strictly attributed to him. I just might take a look at your website to see what might be learned. I definitely don't believe in God, but is it necessary to even mention Christianity?
No it's not. I said it was arbitrary as is any ethical decision.

Is this a response to me? If so, it's in the wrong place.

no soliciting....
I'm not soliciting. I am doing nothing that Christians, fundamentalist Christians, do all the time. They quote from sources, usually the bible, which someone did shortly before this, and I did not see you objecting to him referring people to the bible in a very large banner.

I posted on topic and gave people a resource if they want to pursue that topic. I am not selling shoes.

@Humanist321: you're soliciting. read the guidelines please.
Your question was asked and answered. There is no soliciting. I gain nothing whatsoever if people look for information that simply expands the paragraph if anyone is interested. If you are not interested, don't go there. It is not different than referring people to Romans 13:10. Have you called that soliciting when a fundamentalist refers people to a bible verse? No, I didn't think so. You are just a Christian troll objecting for religious reasons to a humanist statement. btw, read the guidelines, as I have done.

I am curious as to why your profile is blocked so that I cannot see anything about you or your other postings. What are you hiding so that I cannot see anything about you? About me: Before I retired one of the things I did was teach philosophy of religion. What did you do?
