@Universeoflove It made enough sense to take us from the casual brutality of the Roman Empire, through the dark ages, to where we are now. That's something, at least.

@WoodyAq The Roman Empire brought civilization until it was corrupted by early christian insurgents.

@suzie1960 Feeding people to lions is not my idea of civilization.

Don't get me wrong, the Romans did a lot.

But a lot of the protections of which I appreciate a lot, like the right not to be nailed to pieces of wood, were Christian innovations.

@WoodyAq I agree, lions need proper food, especially formulated for members of the cat family.

The Romans were very civilized, crucifixion was just one way of executing serious criminals. Even today, christians execute people in the US. The christian dominated UK didn't abolish the death penalty until 1998 and only then because retaining it was in breach of the European Convention of Human Rights.

@suzie1960 The Romans executed people for entertainment. Oh, and the whole slavery thing ... not very civilized.

Religious people are overrepresented in the campaign against the death penalty in the US.

@WoodyAq The Romans tended to treat their slaves very well, more like domestic servants really, quite the opposite to the way christians treated their, black, slaves.

No doubt some religious people oppose the death penalty and beating children in schools but a lot of christians are firmly in favour of both. They even quote the bible to support their stance.
