So why are people burning their Nike shoes?

Plus, I saw the new Nike commercial, I don't see why it's so controversial.

Nike featured someone who pointedly would not support the national anthem and flag as a protest, then Trump blew it up and painted him as unpatriotic.

Nike is taking a gamble trying to appeal to the African American consumer who also feel marginalized by the country (and who spend a lot of money on sports shoes) at the risk of alienating hardcore conservatives

@plungesponge Wow, people have too much time on their hands. Those shoes are expensive to waste.
SW-User
I'm not burning my Nikes. But fuck Kaepernick.

Why fuck Kaepernick? @SW-User
SW-User
@StrangeDisaster I'm not gonna argue with you about my opinion

They must be protesting the appalling conditions in the third world sweatshops where they are made by 15 year old girls making 30 cents an hour... Yeah, I bet that's it!!
nedkelly · 61-69, M
@GerOttman I see a touch of sarcasm
GerOttman · 61-69, M
@nedkelly Ya Think...
The ad was intended to be anti-American, to get attention.

The stock price dropped and people lost $3 Billion, which is a lot and people became upset.
nedkelly · 61-69, M
I cannot even afford to buy them without burning them

Their way of protesting a Nike Commercial with a guy who many conservatives consider unAmerican for protesting by not standing for the Anthem.
SW-User
@SW-User Buying some shoes and then burning them is a weird way to protest.
SW-User
@SW-User actually it's quite stupid. About as stupid as him protesting police brutality by kneeling during the anthem at a football game.
TexChik · F
@SW-User I think they burned shoes already in their possession. I never cared for their products and didn’t have any To worry about .
touchofgray · 56-60, M
No idea. Created drama where none needs to be. Buy them or don’t. Burn them or don’t. Bottom line is I’m not burning anything I paid good money for.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
I do find it interesting how many celebs are now using the phrase
Just do it !
on their social media posts.
Or even making a statement and adding a ✔ afterwards
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
I'd be planting flowers in them if I had any.

@SW-User Yep.
OfflineFriend · 22-25
Because people disagree and it's there type of protesting .
malizz · 70-79, M
It's politicised, bound to be controversial.
What's the story?
GerOttman · 61-69, M
@Jimmyorjames So this is a cool comment! See there is this famous (...) footballer Colin and he started protesting the anthem played at the start of games. (any bells ringing yet?) Some people loved and hailed him as a hero of the oppressed while others villiffy him as an unpatriotic mongrel! You, living in a different country have no clue and could probably care even less, which I feel is an important reminder of how little some things matter. The Apparel company Nike ran a big flash TV ad to start the new season with you know who as the star. The burning of artifacts is a traditional folk response now used to supplant the recently disfavored practice of burning a witch. You may be more familiar with the legend of the burning Beatles records in the 60's when one of the band (John I think) bemoaned their fame by saying they were being treated like they were more popular than Jesus.
SW-User
No. I don’t have one
