Do you have a hard time throwing away socks with missing partners?

Yes. I always wonder where the missing one is too like where could that damn thing have gone? I'll find it when I throw its mate away.

I just want somebody to tell me what happens to the other sock? Sock-eating monster? Aliens? Overzealous odor-eaters?

I have a pillow case at the bottom of the cupboard filled with all the odd socks. Occasionally I go through it and make any pairs I find.
