I Can Drive a Stick Shift

I'd like to tell my story of how I learned to drive a stick shift. I was 16, and had just gotten my driver's license. I learned to drive in my dad's automatic Dodge. I worked part time in high school for a garden center in a rural area. They had an old truck with a four on the floor. They also had several acres of plant beds and supply piles with dirt roads running through them out back of the shop. I was at work with 2 or 3 other kids when the boss came over. He asked who had driver's licenses. I was the only one that did. He next asked if I could drive a stick shift. I told him no. He told me to load up the truck and take it out back and practice driving it. He said I had to make a delivery into the city in one hour! I learned.🚚

My Dad has a 1966 GTO 4 speed and he taught me how to drive it. I've even had the opportunity to race it once.

Actually, driving a stick shift is easy once you put yourmind to it, as you showed in learning to drive the truck in an hour. My father never had a car with an automatic transmission, so, it was either drive his cars or nothing. It probably helped me that I drove a tractor during the summers. I made my kids learn to drive a stick as a matter of principle before I wold let them drive the car with the automatic tranny.

PS. If you want to drive tractor-trailer rig, you have to kjnow how to shift. Most are standards.

Interesting - and quick learning on your part too. Manual drive or, as you call them, stick-shift cars are more common than automatics here in the UK and I have never owned an automatic car. The only times I have driven automatics for any distance is when I've been in America. Love your cars too. I had a Dodge Charger both times I was there.

Thanks for your reply, fazer. Unfortunately manual drive cars seems to be dying out here. Ford doesn't even make a full size pickup truck with a manual drive transmission anymore.

Well, I wasn't very good from the starting line. My Dad showed me how to use the clutch to cut down spinning my wheels so much...but I got nervous and just sat there burning rubber.

Once I started that...it was all over.

My dad taught me to drive a stick shift in a Mustang. I told him I didn't want to...but he said once I learned, I'd never forget.
I ended up in a ditch.
lol
:)
He never let me drive the Mustang again.

I learned to drive a stick when I was 19, and refused to own an automatic for years after.

I used to also, would probably need to practice a little first.
I learned how to drive on a stick shift.

I dont like driving a stick though. Especially when I hit a stop light on a hill. I'm always scared I'm going to roll backwards and kill someone.

haha
The Mustange was fine
Only my ego was bruised
But ya know what?
I can still drive a stick if needed.
Dad was always right.

Jenn, good that you can drive a stick. And of course, Dad's are always right, once we get old enough to realize that anyway.

Jenn, oh no, that is just terrible. Horrible actually.... I hope the Mustang was okay. ☺

Lov2smile, your dad's GTO sounds like a great car. And very cool to have raced it also.
