I Can Drive a Stick Shift

I'd like to tell my story of how I learned to drive a stick shift. I was 16, and had just gotten my driver's license. I learned to drive in my dad's automatic Dodge. I worked part time in high school for a garden center in a rural area. They had an old truck with a four on the floor. They also had several acres of plant beds and supply piles with dirt roads running through them out back of the shop. I was at work with 2 or 3 other kids when the boss came over. He asked who had driver's licenses. I was the only one that did. He next asked if I could drive a stick shift. I told him no. He told me to load up the truck and take it out back and practice driving it. He said I had to make a delivery into the city in one hour! I learned.馃殮

Actually, driving a stick shift is easy once you put yourmind to it, as you showed in learning to drive the truck in an hour. My father never had a car with an automatic transmission, so, it was either drive his cars or nothing. It probably helped me that I drove a tractor during the summers. I made my kids learn to drive a stick as a matter of principle before I wold let them drive the car with the automatic tranny.

PS. If you want to drive tractor-trailer rig, you have to kjnow how to shift. Most are standards.
