My mother had hers checked. They had to lift their skirts in assembly and have a hankie in their knickers pocket. @Mrpauldavies

Yes. My mother’s school knickers had a pocket for her hankie. And they had to kneel in assembly to check the length of their skirts and then lift their skirt to check they had a hankie, @BlackBlossom @BlackBlossom

It don’t happen now but we don’t really try it on with short skirts and stuff. We all wear knee length. No one really minds. @Mrpauldavies

@BlackBlossom I taught in the 60s and 70s when uniforms were very much shorter than would be considered acceptable now. It made it all the more important that girls word suitable underwear.

I find it incredible that it was so. My skirt for school is almost knee length.. We think a few centimetres higher is short. Did we miss something? @Oldmanjimbo

@Blodyn shorter skirts and dresses were considered more acceptable by society as a whole in that era.

There were too many comments flying back and fore! I was replying to your comment about seeing thighs. We don’t do that now because our skirts are quite long but most kids here have thighs that are ok. Because I swim, mine are seen almost day. It isn’t at all a problem. But some girls are embarrassed about their thighs. So I am pleased that the Department for Education has persuaded the supermarkets to make our skirts knee length. @Oldmanjimbo
