I Will Take As Many Words As I Want To Write This Story

The good, the bad and the ugly (not in that order)

I’ll start with the bad: my mother died last week.

The good: so many people are showing kindness. Whenever something bad happens to me, at least I have lots of people reaching out to me. That helps more than I can say.

And, the ugly: the company I work for does not have a bereavement leave policy. So, I had to use some paid time off to see my mother one last time and go to the funeral.

And you know what’s *really* ugly? I didn’t have enough PTO left to cover all the time I was gone. So I’ve had to use leave without pay, which means a smaller paycheck next time.

I’m considering looking for another job.

Very few USA companies treat their employees with dignity. The majority treat them as another office supply.
It reminds me of a Dilbert strip where the pointy-haired boss says "We used to say employees were our most important asset. But we did a study and found out they are third after carbon paper."

@jim44444 Yes, I restrained myself from telling the CEO, “My bad - I should have asked my mom to postpone dying until I had more PTO saved up.”

Great reply but a wise choice to not share it with the CEO.

Oh Kat, I am so sorry for your loss. I didn’t realize she was so advanced in her illness. My heartfelt condolences to you, and your family.

I don’t think much of a company that does not have leave for bereavement. That’s insensitive at best, and they just added stress to your sorrow.

Comforting hugs.

Wow. Your company is wrong. I'm so sorry, Kat. I work for a small company, and we have bereavement leave. That's ridiculous. Getting a smaller paycheck is tough. I just went through that since I didn't have enough PTO, but we went on vacation so it was worth it. I hope you find a more compassionate place to work!

How could such a company expect any loyalty from its employees when they can't show the slightest compassion? I am so sorry you had to deal with that on top of everything else. No wonder you're angry, and you should definitely look for another job.
It’s a shame every company doesn’t have some form of bereavement paid time off. Sorry for your loss, I hope you have many happy memories that help give you some peace at this time.

Truly sorry for your loss. It is sad more companies don't offer something for that, but a lot don't. I guess that is the nature of work, usually something wrong with it.
