Today while out on a country road there was this little dove just sitting in the middle of the road. We passed him and he didn’t fly away just sat there. Pulled over and poor thing just sat there even as other cars passed. I’m so grateful he wasn’t hit. I walked over to him and he just looked at me, didn’t move or act scared at all. I picked him up and he just let me. Acted like we were old friends. He is now at a wildlife rehab ❤️
What a good deed. My own experience with birds is that when they are in distress they are open to human assistance.
I discovered this after reassembling a totally destroyed nest with scattered, featherless newly-hatched babes. After rebuilding a nest in a safer location, relocating the babes and feeding them for a day, mom and dad returned and took over the feeding, care and upbringing of their chlldren. And they accepted my nearby presence without it disturbing them.

@Heartlander that’s amazing! I’m glad you were there to help.
After mom and dad took over it was a great treat witnessing the process from just hatched to when and how they flew away.
When I relocated the nest I put it in an old flower pot on the deck by a patio door ... about 15 or 20 feet from it's original location which had been on a precarious ledge. After the parents re-inserted themselves as responsible caretakers, we then became like a part of their trusted family.
It was amazing watching the parent pair work together to feed, protect and raise their babes. A "bird-brain" is a pretty sophisticated, cunning and intelligent piece of bio-mass :)
The babes also showed individual discipline when the parents had to tend to each in sequence. Like it took a couple of days to get a babe reliably airborne. Meanwhile, the other siblings stayed in or very near the nest, patiently waiting their turn.

@Heartlander it must have been a wonderful thing to witness, thank you for sharing. 🙂
@DanielChristensen It's not though is it. When I saw it I thought it might be diseased and you could catch bird flue or something, so I'm not sure I'd have been so kind. Kindness like LaVida has shown is rare.
@SW-User aw thanks again. He was a sweet lil thing.

@SW-User That Dove looks like an innocent sweet little bird. I saved a big turtle about 6 months ago in the middle of a busy highway. Took it back to the lake where it came from. I hope it stayed in it this time. It took off like a rocket into that water as soon as I let it loose!
