I Have Random Thoughts Of Randomness
Last night, the place I work had a big event, pretty much the biggest event it holds each year. I've never gone before — more than five people in a room — but one of my co-workers couldn't make it so I had to cover his usual tasks.
At the banquet, I picked out a seat near the area I would have to do my thing during the presentation — nothing major, just making sure some videos played when they were supposed to. Other people joined me at the table, most of whom I didn't recognize.
One fellow noticed the script I had — the schedule of events — and asked about it. The thing was, he used my name. I didn't recognize the guy, nor did he look familiar.
I had to look on my institution's website to see who the guy was. It was only then that I realized that this was a guy who literally works down the hall from my office. I see the guy pretty much ever day. And yet, in this different context of the event, I had no idea who he was.
Sure, things were different. It was a different place. He was wearing a suit and glasses, which he normally doesn't. I was concentrating on the tasks I had to perform. It's just that it seems weird that I didn't recognize the guy at all.
