I recon Mary got pregnant by Joseph but he did love her. The only way to spin it so she didn't get stoned was they both came up with the same story. Everyone believed them and rumour spread so Herod joined in because he was probably also somewhat paranoid of eventual rebellion and added fuel to the fire.
Jesus grew up believing the story and was taught at the synagogue the mysteries of the Quaballah. However he came from a carpenter and a wayward woman so he had somewhat communist views and therefore is infact a legend in his own right. Throwing out ideas about no pork because people would starve than eat pork, accepting prostitutes because somewhere in his psyche he knew his father saved his mother (which at that time many men would not have done).
The human mind is a powerful thing and his teachings profound and advanced for his time therefore our own beliefs as a human race give energy to this and therefore "Jesus" as a construct of the human mind gives healing, comfort and release from guilt etc etc to those who embrace this concept.
Muhammad on the other hand, I doubt his motives somewhat and the religion seems to offer none of what Jesus offered with many Muslims believing they will at best end up on one of the steps from hell to heaven. It's a faith that feeds self persecution and self hate, it appears to me, segregation - as in they accept eachother but not others while Christianity seeks to help all (the good samaritan story).
