I am Vegan

I've been one for eighteen years now and although (some) vegans have a bad reputation for being preachy and over zealous, I feel like my attitude will reflect on the whole tribe of us, so I strive to be a non-judgey vegan and I do understand how people bond over a bacon sandwich but as long as no one tries to shove one in my face crowing,'you want it, you know you do!' It's a personal choice.🐄

You've got a great attitude. One of my sisters has been a vegetarian since the age of 14 and she has never been "preachy" about it. She's smart enough to know that would only alienate people, not win them over to a meatless diet. As for myself, I love meat and believe it can be part of a healthy diet (it's low-to-no carbs), but I don't try to persuade my sister or other vegetarians/vegans to indulge in it. I think it's best to respect people's choices on this.

@Rutterman ☝ Exactly my thought as well. Worded much better than I did.

I honestly don't think about stuff like that. To me, food is just food for when we are hungry. There not really a wrong or right way for what we eat and it comes down to personal choice as you say. I am quite picky when it comes to food but right where I live the food choices are very poor to have a quite peculiar diet of lifestyle we often wish to have. If I could I would just be eating fish and vegetables every day but sadly the demand for fresh fish is very limited and very expensive.

@SW-User .. and has a high mercury content .. 🐟

Very true. Mercury poisoning can happen but luckily variety helps.
I've been checking into it, for health reasons. My mother has been a vegetarian (not vegan) for about 25 years now and my father's cut red meat and most flesh out of his diet. They're in their 80s and don't look like it at all.

@bijouxbroussard Good to know. When I was ten I was solemnly told by my doctor I'd never reach an advanced age without eating meat! I think doctors have a responsibility to report facts, not prejudices.

@bijouxbroussard There are plenty of books, magazines, blogs and documentaries that can offer valuable insight. Do things slowly by incorporating more whole grain, beans, legumes, nuts, seeds and tofu (which has all nine amino acids) into your diet and collect and experiment with vegan recipes that appeal to you. Some people find it an easy switch into being vegan, but it's best to educate yourself first. There are some wonderful non dairy alternative foods such as almond, soy and coconut milk and plenty of delicious foods, it's easy to veganise your old favourite meals and recipes. Never fear change, get excited about it!

Agreed. I've been a vegetarian since childhood but haven't taken the final step of eliminating all dairy produce. At least there's a difference of degree between killing an animal and milking a cow, although I admit preferring not to think about where the ingredient of my yogurt actually comes from!

@alan20 Plenty of delicious vegan yogurts and desserts, even ice cream.

@Beanie Might well look into that. I recently discovered a creperie that does delicious vegan pancakes : buckwheat and rice milk. Only problem is - its 300 miles away (in Killarney). I'm no cook!

I'm not a vegan but I prefer vegetables over meat and I respect those that are able to stick to the diet of their choice. As long as you're getting your B12 and feel good, you should be proud of what you're accomplishing.
Elessar · 26-30, M
Not a vegan myself, but I can't stand either vegans or non-vegans trying to force the other "faction" to adopt their food habits. As long as one's happy with their choice, s/he shouldn't be bothered, IMO.
unknownpoetx · 36-40, M
why are you a vegan?
Beanie · 36-40, F
@unknownpoetx
Because I love animals, I don't want to be involved in anything that contributes to their suffering, I'm also disgusted with the mass meat production industry. The more I looked into health and the environment the more I became committed. Each of us should learn as best we can about what we are taking into our bodies, factory farms treat their animals terribly and the meat and dairy are filled with antibiotics and synthetic hormones and life threatening bacteria, ect. No thanks.
HannahSavannah · 26-30, F
I've been vegetarian for two years, vegan for one :D I completely understand. I don't even like telling people I'm vegan because of how people react...
