I Am On a Self Improvement Journey
Self-help Book... Really? (written 9/12/16 12:47am)
So, I'm currently reading "Make Miracles in Forty Days" by Melody Beattie. I'm normally not one for self-help books, but my aunt read it, sent it to me in the mail, and said that she had to share it with my because it changed her life. My life is pretty okay at the moment. It''s not like, 'Shazam', but it's good enough. I figured reading this book couldn't hurt though. In chapter two, the book challenges you to do the miracle exercise for 40 days, but before beginning, it asks you to write down your answers to a few questions. Mine are as follows:
If I could change anything in my life right now, it would be my lack of confidence in myself. I would like to believe in the abilities that I have. In the areas that I am lacking, I would like to be able to realize that insufficiency is only temporary and that with hard work and commitment, that can get better as well. For the things that just are... I would like to find peace with it.
I think I've had problems with my confidence levels my entire life, but it only became painfully obvious after allowing myself to stay in an abusive relationship for 1.5 years. Initially, I tried fixing my lack of confidence through the reassurance and validation of others (hence the boyfriend). I never felt good enough unless I was told that I was good enough. I had created a co-dependent situation which was founded on needs instead of actual love. I needed to feel valued, and he needed _____ (insert whatever the $#&! that was here). As a result, I was happy... temporarily.
So now I'm going to see what this book has to offer. I'm going to commit to these exercises for the next 40 days, and let you know how it turns out in the end. Can't hurt.
