I Had Surgery

I just looked up my insurance Explanation of Benefits.

Surgery and one night in the hospital they billed $40,000.

This is what it's like to get sick in the US. And this is only one bill.

And probably if you were a self-pay patient, that cost would be a quarter of that (probably even less).

When I had my daughter, I was billed 13K (no-nonsense healthy vaginal delivery - no meds). I didn't have typical insurance so to them, I was self-pay. I received a 75% discount plus another 20% on that balance for paying within 15 days. My total? $2600. It's crazy to think that there's people in this world (too many people) paying $1000 monthly premiums with 10K deductibles. So to a normal healthy woman having a child in that situation - her bills (premiums + deductible) for having a baby that year would have been $22K! And how awful would that be if her baby was born December 31st! Deductible would start over the next day...

Not saying insurance is bad - not saying that at all! But the difference between what they bill insurance companies and what they bill an individual paying out of pocket is ridiculous. Fortunately, we're apart of a health-share ministry that reimburses us for all our bills. We get 100% covered! I'm so thankful I never have to fight with another insurance company again!

I'm assuming you do have insurance? I hope they pick up a very large portion of that bill for you. Good luck!

@MissSimpleMind I do. I'll probably owe about $7000 grand total for the past 3 months. I've had a lot of medical issues. I'm filling out financial assistance applications today but I might be over income. I'll just have to call and negotiate with everyone. It shouldn't be like this.
Will your insurance pick up most of it? I hope so. I was hospitalized 2 years ago...$53,000. Thank God for Medicare. I only owed $117.00 Good luck.
Well, if you do, hopefully if you don't have that kind of $$$ readily available, the medical facility can work out a payment plan with you. Good luck.@abooklover

@soar2newhighs I don't even remotely have that kind of money. I'm filling out financial assistance applications today.
Good luck with that.@abooklover

it will be reduced. Hospitals have contracts with the carriers. It will get knocked down substantially.

@abooklover believe me i know. i had 2 surgeries and then MRSA. i almost went bankrupt. the meds alone for MRSA were from 900-4000 and there was no coverage under my plan. they decided to pay for the meds because nothing else would work.

@akindheart Good grief, that's awful. I'm so sorry you had to go through that.

@abooklover my plan was the free one from work. i upped it last year so i only pay 20% not 50% (thank you!!)

The cost of healthcare in this country is ridiculous.
ChampagneOnIce · 51-55, F
@abooklover I agree. I’m sorry. I worry we’re an illness away from bankruptcy. 😔
abooklover · 56-60, F
@ChampagneOnIce Yah that's how I feel. 😓
ChampagneOnIce · 51-55, F
@abooklover Should be unnecessary stress. Grrr... 😠

abooklover · 56-60, F
