In some cultures people are still forced in servitude, or making very little where they would be considered enslaved. I came across a Syrian lady who was house sitting for some rich Arabs. They didn't want to pay her and she couldn't leave the house if they were gone sometimes weeks at the time.
Unfortunately people do take advantage of the vulnerable, because they have little to no better options for earning an income.
Similar to sweat shops in Asian countries that manufacture many of our goods.
