I Don't Like Being Called Babe Or Hun By Strangers

It’s American. It means Males are dominant. It means Women are weaker, inferior. It has to stop.
LucyFuhr · 56-60, F
Not necessarily. I've been called that by both, men and women.
It isn't that "cut and dried".
LadyGemini · F
That’s... not true
jim44444 · 70-79, M
I get called hun by younger women all the time. It is just their habit. It does not make them weaker or inferior nor does it make me weaker or inferior.
Don't sweat the small stuff.
LiliMountainGirl · 22-25, F
Ok. It’s just language. We assume that when Americans speak English they understand the same meaning as English words. But the words look the same but the meaning is becoming more and more different. @jim44444

Continental drift.

I guess you're not aware of how many women call men "hun" or "babe," huh?
Either way it's kind of a bullshit thing to call anyone you don't know.
But you might want to slow your roll on the 'inferior women' angle.

It's a term of endearment and says more about the speaker than it ever does about you. NBD.
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
Are you sure you are not making this a bigger deal than it really is?
Shayla · F
I use both of those terms for my male partner occasionally.

ok sweetie 😱 ( oh one he didnt )
11knaves11 · 41-45, M
Never actually thought about it from that perspective. I can see why you feel that way. I tend to use it in an “endearing" manner though.
Groofydorkgerdo · 56-60, M
American women do this WAY more than guys
Virgo79 · 61-69, M
I never heard of that!
So what does it mean when the stranger is a woman saying it ? I agree that it can be condescending, but not always sexist.
CoffeeFirst · 56-60, F
@bijouxbroussard You betcha. Now, when DH starts talking to the TV and calls women "sweetheart", that ain't no term of endearment.
@CoffeeFirst Lol, one of the clerks used to call me “hun” when I was often there requesting files. In that case, I suspect the reference was Attila. 😅
CoffeeFirst · 56-60, F
@bijouxbroussard Bwahahahaha. 🤭
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
I think it's a weird habit to call strangers by such things.

In the southeast it is common even among females. Hun, sweetie, darling... I've been called all of the above by random females.
DDonde · 31-35, M
I've been called hun by women.
LiliMountainGirl · 22-25, F
The words in American and in English look the same. They have by now totally different meanings. @DDonde
