Bearserks I do not think we can select who we can study but we have to look for them. Students jump into the classes who have good teachers to study. Students jump into the countries that can supply good education for their career paths. That is what I meant when I used the word " selective".
Your opinion is very broad while I just discussed about being selective to be educated for career paths. Are you discussing about why Asian students claim American students are not smart? As I said above, your education focuses on building characters and deep knowledge. Many successful Americans have deep knowledge about their fields because they motivate themselves to learn and read books everyday while Asians are not. My friends, who are engineers in Canada and England, told me that they really admire American engineers because of their knowledge. However, Asians are good at studying. We usually study over 12 hours everyday. Most young Asian youth I met have excellent studying records but they seriously lack necessary skills and need to learn much to change their arrogant attitude.
I used to volunteer to teach children in some churches in America. Many kids I taught did not remember multiplication table although they were in class 4 or 5. Those children were usually naughty and made problems in the classes everyday. However, they were never be claimed badly and beaten as we did in our countries. Their classmates also did not run far away from them because they were bad students. Children were usually taken to the principles who showed them their faults. In some serious cases, they would be sent to home in that day but they could attend the class in the next day. I really like your American educating because I believe building characters is much more important for a long run. Maybe your education is easy but it gives time for students to focus on practicing in life and learning what they want. That is why American have excellent and famous people in all fields.
