I Am An Asian

I am an Asian. I came to the US for my higher education. During these years, people have usually looked at me with curiosity because I am short, brown eyes, yellow skin, and long hair. Some classmates are eager to help me while the others do not talk with me no matter how hard I tried. My friend has recently asked me why Asians were so cheap to be used as jokes from daily life to tv shows. I have watched those shows but it does not mean that is how we are. Those shows are for laughing from imaginary stories but many Americans forget this main point. I think that many Americans are too weak to learn about the others so they prefer ignoring and laughing.

It’s funny that we are marked with poor education and yet the people who are stereotypically known as the hardest of studiers are being sent here for education...
I thought America was marked for poor education as far as public elementary, middle, and high schools go. She is older and studying at a college or university where the education is better than it might be in her home country. @Bearserks

@MissMollyCharlotte0702 that makes more sense.

@Bearserks I do not know how about your educational system is b/c I just came here for my higher education. Many Asians who attend to high schools and colleges told me that Americans were not smart and their lessons were too easy. For me, I have learnt a lot from my friends and professors. We usually share our working experiences in the class and discuss with each others. My professors are also interesting people because they have huge knowledge and guide us with compassion. I do not think that American are not smart. I think the way you educate children focus on building up their American characters and stable knowledge.

And I want to tell you that we are very selective for our education. It depends on our career choices that we can choose the other countries, instead of America. For instance: America is good to study about marketing, engineering while Holland and Japan are good destinations for studying about agriculture.

@wildflower12 The big difference is you work for your education and are willing to learn because your parents or relatives taught you to have a good work ethic. In the USA parents do not do that and the educators in K thru 12 grades do not either. Our education system is run primarily by liberals who do not know how to teach or instill good work ethics.

@wildflower12 that’s really fascinating in regards to different countries having different specialization!

Maybe you are also more selective on who you hire for educating students and that’s why the beginning schools have more quality? Along with what you said about the way we educate our kids. I feel like it’s very hit and miss with the teachers here but I’m not sure if that just depends on how the student and the faculty member interact or if it is just the teacher themselves..

@acpguy I am not sure if we are taught about working ethics but we were thought that we can have better life through education. Parents usually pay much attention on their children'records and compare children to each others. Most parents have numbers of their children's teachers to contact them and ask about their children's education. Living in a society like that, we "must" study and have as many certificates as we can. We can be lucky and unlucky to grow up in Asia. No matter what countries, I think children need a motivation to have good working ethics and this attitude must be given by their families, instead of school systems.

@Bearserks I do not think we can select who we can study but we have to look for them. Students jump into the classes who have good teachers to study. Students jump into the countries that can supply good education for their career paths. That is what I meant when I used the word " selective".

Your opinion is very broad while I just discussed about being selective to be educated for career paths. Are you discussing about why Asian students claim American students are not smart? As I said above, your education focuses on building characters and deep knowledge. Many successful Americans have deep knowledge about their fields because they motivate themselves to learn and read books everyday while Asians are not. My friends, who are engineers in Canada and England, told me that they really admire American engineers because of their knowledge. However, Asians are good at studying. We usually study over 12 hours everyday. Most young Asian youth I met have excellent studying records but they seriously lack necessary skills and need to learn much to change their arrogant attitude.

I used to volunteer to teach children in some churches in America. Many kids I taught did not remember multiplication table although they were in class 4 or 5. Those children were usually naughty and made problems in the classes everyday. However, they were never be claimed badly and beaten as we did in our countries. Their classmates also did not run far away from them because they were bad students. Children were usually taken to the principles who showed them their faults. In some serious cases, they would be sent to home in that day but they could attend the class in the next day. I really like your American educating because I believe building characters is much more important for a long run. Maybe your education is easy but it gives time for students to focus on practicing in life and learning what they want. That is why American have excellent and famous people in all fields.

@wildflower12 I was lucky. I went to a private Catholic grade school and they were very good and very demanding. For High School I was also lucky as I received a scholarship to a very good Jesuit school and they were even tougher as we had to maintain a 3.5 grade point average or we would get kicked out. I had several college credits for AP Classes at that high school also which helped going to college. When I saw the difference before, during and after graduating it was amazing. I received a college degree in education with a double major but never taught as I was offered a private sector job for twice the salary of what teachers were making.

@acpguy I think GPA is also a tool of motivating students to "be alike the other". Did your school apply record ranking too, acp guy?
