Dilettante

it. - a person who cultivates an area of interest, such as the arts or literature, without real commitment or knowledge.

edit: there's nothing wrong with being a dilettante (unless you're ignorant about it). This is just a definition of a new word I found and thought I would write it down.

Yes - and is there anything wrong in this?
helenS · 36-40, F
@MartinII Maybe you love "Parsifal" even more than I do...

Cricket - so very English! 😁
MartinII · 70-79, M
@helenS Well, I certainly love Parsifal. And cricket is one of our gifts to the world ... 😊🤔

@MartinII There is a reason behind my post but it wasn't to judge anyone.

Dilettantes are not ignoramuses. They are interested in a field without being experts in that field, and they know they are not experts. Whereas ignorant persons think they know it all. It's their ignorance that makes them think they are experts.
Melpomene · 22-25, F
@helenS I didn't say they're ignorant. This is just a definition
helenS · 36-40, F
@Melpomene Yes I know you did not say that.

It's a great word. Little snobby but that's part of the fun of it. :D

Oh... that sounds like me!
Melpomene · 22-25, F
@Adaydreambeliever How do you feel about that?
Adaydreambeliever · 56-60, F
@Melpomene lol pretty good actually! I think it's cool that even though I don't have any background in any of those areas and don't know diddly about most of it.. that I am trying ... albeit in a small and not very committed way.. Some exposure to literature and the arts is better than not trying at all :)

Thanks. I think that applies to me at times. :)
