How do people willingly not want to go to college?

I mean it's expensive and that definitely is enough reason not to go, but if you have the ability to go why not? I just don't understand and I hate that excuse of "my dad didn't go and he turned out alright", yeah that was 20 years ago and now the economy changed and even if you have an undergrad college degree you might not get hired so you should aim higher in your education. Idk. Maybe i'm lacking insight in this currently.

Depends on the times, in the 90s there were a lot of jobs popping up for college educated people now there are more college educated people than jobs for them. Sure it makes sense if you're going to make it big to take a higher education but if you're just going to make a couple hundred more than average joe and put in the same amount of workhours...doesn't it seem like a lot of wasted time that you could have spent moving your life along? There are too many people overqualified and underpaid that regret not doing something else with their youth so don't be too quick to judge.
offingg · 26-30, F
@kayoshin Sure, but are there more jobs for highschool graduates than for college graduates? Not really.
kayoshin · 36-40, M
Actually yes there are. Look at a factory how many engineers vs how many handlers and cleaners ? A store how many managers vs how many sales people restockers etc? Just use logic there is no way to have more brains than hands. There are very few job areas where the whole the majority of personel needs a degree (IT, Marketing) in the rest people with degrees are at the top while the majority rest are workers with jobs that only require highschool or professional or technical education not college degrees. Look at hospitals for example and count how many are actually college graduates vs how many just have nursing school technician education etc but not an actual university graduation.
It's a simple thing: We can't all be in charge some have to execute the orders as well.

My son is a manager of a major store in retail and his biggest work force are people that have graduated from college and universities that can't get employment and it makes them sick that they put in all that hard graph and it hasn't given them a step up the ladder...
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@offingg just because some may not go to college or university and don't strive to do so does not mean they can't be successful in life...some want to be out earning money and living...further education is not for everyone..
shuhak · M
@Primnproper I started out as a courtesy clerk in a grocery store (right out of college) and eventually became a department manager.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@shuhak exactly sometimes on the job training can get you up there even quicker, it depends how conscientious you are..
Newandimproved · 61-69, M
Well mich of what you say is true of course. I have a degree and have never worked a day in my life with my degree.

Nowadays the cost is outrageousoh expensive and many graduates have crippling debt even before they start to work

And not all people are college material.

That isn't to say that you should stop at high school. A trade school or a 2 year certification at a college may serve more useful to many
Newandimproved · 61-69, M
@offingg I am thinking of a few friends of mine that never went to college and work in the trades. One of them in particular set his price high and gets it because his work is so good.

Same thing with mechanics. They can make a decent wage out of high school with proper training. They are looked down on by some...until their car breaks down. I think we may see a shift in the way colleges give degrees with less emphasis on classes that dont help a person 'with their major.

You are right. Some places require a degree and for some jobs they are essential

I don't want my surgeon to get his training on the job :)
offingg · 26-30, F
@Newandimproved

Sure, but as I've again already mentioned that was a long time ago with a different market more receipetive to highschool graduates who built off their careers since then. Now, times are much harder and getting any job on a highschool degree is very hard.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Newandimproved Best Answer to that.

Had I known of trades back in high school, I would have done that. The school, teachers, etc drilled college, college, college into our heads. they'd say how we'd all work at mac donalds if we didn't. No mentioning trades or military...

It really wasn't a big deal back in the day. It seems today you NEED a degree.

@offingg The whole English language is older than us. 🤷

Literally.

Literally.

No correlation.

College isn't for everybody.
Some just want to help with family income. Some just want to earn for themselves !
College is also expensive ! Forget the cost of your course. Living expenses; ongoing bills; etc.
I had to wait until i was about 37 before i could afford to go !
And even then i had to fund myself.
offingg · 26-30, F
@Picklebobble2 Yes that is why I mentioned that if you can't afford it, it's a good reason not to go

I'm getting really tired of people mentioning points i've already said 109 times.
Paschar · 70-79, M
There are other reasons aside from not wanting to go , That is having no other options but to Home School due to a disability .
Paschar · 70-79, M
@offingg I was physically able back in the day , But Not Visually even though I had a vast fortune to be able to afford collage
offingg · 26-30, F
@Paschar Back in the day is a different time from now. Please refer to the paragraph I wrote it explains my whole point.
Paschar · 70-79, M
@offingg but if you have the ability to go why not? / did you mean paragraph ?

Now as an online teacher I know the cost of college , My Forum for the dyslexic for an example just to get started cost $26.000 just for the computer adaptive tool technology .
