I Am Different [Being Different]

I feel like there's something wrong with me. 98% of the posts on this site seem completely boring and asinine to me. Like, I read them and it's an experience akin to looking at wood-grain lines - it's not as bad as watching paint dry or something, but I still have no desire to spend my time doing it. The same is true irl - most of the things that people talk about seem so pointless to me. I WISH that I could look at random memes or make small talk about nothing or enjoy this texting mentality that seems so prevalent nowadays - but I can't. I wish that the funny, banter-y stuff that makes up 95% of this site appealed to me. But it doesn't.

Unless a conversation has depth or intimacy or something else that gives it meaning, then I just don't get anything out of it. I never have, and I don't think I ever will. It's not a fun way to live, but it's who I am.

I was never on EP, so I can't compare it to SW. However, I think there are more serious and deep conversations taking place here, but perhaps through private messages. Regardless, being different does not mean that something is wrong with you. People have different motives for being here. You just need to find the ones who you connect with and then decide whether to ignore or learn to enjoy the rest. 馃檪

People whine about the differences between here and EP, but it's honestly 99% the same in the areas that really matter, to the point where I think of it as a single slowly-evolving entity that just happened to have a much needed growth-spurt and get a new name recently (SO nice to finally be able to mute people, and filter out the sex idiots and teenyboppers).

You're right, there's a lot more depth in pm's than we can see on the surface. But still, over the past 6 years or so, I've watched a slow but steady shift - on here/EP, and on other sites like Facebook - toward a sort of texting-mentality that contains less and less depth or real connection. This site has become more like Facebook, and Facebook has become more like... a more Facebook-y Facebook. Yeah, that works. I'm honestly never going to be one of those old people who's still "with it" and keeps up with the times - I'll be one of those grumpy old dudes who complains about all the new-fangled internets and telekenetic robots and whatnot.

This is a boring site but not as bad as other sites. RelatetoThat was a piece of shit and so was answermug.

Agreed. God yes, there were like 20 people who posted 99% of the content on R2T, and there was no flavor or edge to any of it.

@BlueDiver: I don't have a sense of humor either so I don't laugh at anything that's supposed to be funny.

Yeah, I know the feeling. I find some things funny - The Big Bang Theory comes to mind - but I just don't seek out comedy the way that most people do. I sometimes think that the vast majority of the human race is all about what's funny and lighthearted, but I somehow missed the memo.

Your mind needs to be challenged and you need to connect on a deeper level. There's nothing wrong with that. But please, do allow yourself moments of silliness every now and then.

I hope it's not rude of me to ask... but is it possible that you have depression? Sometimes being clinically depressed can make things that way....
BlueDiver36-40, M
I do deal with some depression - but not the sort of crippling clinical depression that some people do. I've been there, when I was going through some intense shit back in 2010, but nowadays it's not something that hits me with the sort of intensity that keeps me from enjoying life. Well... I mean, I don't enjoy life - but that's less about being depressed and more about my life sucking and including very little in the way of meaning or joyful activities.

I wish there was more seriousness and depth here too.

There used to be, back in the earlier days of when it was EP.

There's nothing wrong with you. It's just a preference.
