I Live In Oregon

So there's a separatist group in my state petitioning to expand Oregon's borders to include Idaho and a piece of Northern California (because why not?) to create a "Greater Idaho" state. The group behind the petition are a group of conservatives claiming they are fed up living in a Democratic-majority state so instead of moving to another state, they wish to create a "super-conservative mega-state". 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️ Regardless of which side you're on politically, you have to admit that this is unbelievably stupid. As an Oregonian myself, this is straight-up embarrassing! Some states are majority Democrat, some states are majority Republican. That's just how it is! If you hate living in a state that's run by the party you're opposed to so much, you can always just move to another state. Or you can create a petition to move your state's borders to a neighboring state that's who your political alignment is the majority, out of complete disregard for those who would be effected and don't want the change, all so you can be happy! Excuse me, so you can maintain your rural values. For those conservatives who always make fun of liberals for being "snowflakes" all the time: what do you call this? 🙄

Wy would you be embarrassed? They'll never get their wish. There's a similar group in Washington State, or to be exact, there have been multiple groups, in WA-OR-ID that thinks of our corner of the nation, as the last white refuge. They'll never get their wish.
@Northwest Well that is such ancient news, I can't imagine why anyone would still think that's a thing today.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@PerchingDove That’s basically yesterday lol. But there is a reason why I included “technically” - I know none of that would be enforceable today even if still on the books.
Northwest · M
@PerchingDove I agree, it's ancient news, but Oregon today, suffers from a the trickle down effect. I am not saying that Portland is anti-black. The contrary is true, but when you see a sign, on Mississippi Ave, that says "how many black families were displaced, to gentrify this spot?", the answer is none, as there weren't any.

As an Oregonian, I can say that the frustration of living in a liberal state is great. Yet some of what you say is absolutely correct. I understand what drives the desire to propose changing state lines, but picking up and moving is likely the better choice if you lose all hope for the future.

The idea of being taxed as if I had unlimited income is disheartening and the fact that with certain bills looking likely to pass that have the potential to turn me from a law-abiding citizen into a potential felon just for exercising my rights as an American...

Wish the liberal mentality wasn't so focused on controlling the lives and lifestyles.
@sunrisehawk I didn't make any blanket statement. All I said was conservatives (didn't say all) are just as guilty of wanting to control people's lives as liberals are. You actually made more of a blanket statement than I did by saying "the liberal mentality". Guess generalizations are okay when they're against the left. Whatever.

@PerchingDove Apologize for offending you. Have a good day.
@sunrisehawk You didn't offend me, you just missed my point or refused to acknowledge it. But again, whatever.

Are they really this afraid and paranoid that not everyone thinks like them and they need to make this much of a drastic move?
😳

I guess our country really is divided.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
The funny thing is that they are straight up cutting themselves off the actual tax base that subsidizes those unproductive backwaters.

But hey, you guys want to own the paradise that is Eureka CA? Enjoy.
Northwest · M
@QuixoticSoul Throw in Weed, if they want to make it that far.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Northwest I keep meaning to stop by for my t-shirt sigh.
Northwest · M
@QuixoticSoul I made a point of stopping by a few months ago. It's still about the same as ever. PS: they still have that combo antique store/restaurant, or whatever that is, but it's owned by Vietnamese immigrants now.

Politics is something I will probably never understand. ...no matter what party is in "power" anywhere, there will always be some that do not feel represented. Most can and agree and disagree with issues on both sides..this hard right and hard left stuff is just crazy. It's the feeling underrepresented that are creating this breakaway movement. Which most likely will not happen. The future looks utterly chaotic to me....
Heartlander · 80-89, M
I would thing that an advantage would be to go the other direction, like chop off a piece of one state and make an additional tiny state, which would then have 2 seats in the US senate. It's why New England is such a political powerhouse. The smaller the state the greater the disproportion of power that small state would gain.

Combining states would mean diluting the power of the senators, and possibly house members.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Heartlander They’re looking to create a new and tiny (by population) state - by taking chunks from three others.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@QuixoticSoul

Thanks. It sounded like Idaho was going to be expanded by adding parts of California and Oregon.

Regardless, it's unlikely that any state would voluntarily agree to reduce it's relative political representation unless it sees the separatist as a far greater annoyance. Such annoyances are traditionally dealt with by punishing them.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Heartlander You’re probably right, I think I misread the OP.

I must admit, I find certain aspects of the American political system somewhat strange lol, so this doesn't surprise me
Jj2k00 · F
So they’re trying to gerrymander on a massive scale?
@Jj2k00 Yes, that’s pretty much what this is. I had to look up gerrymandering, lol.
Jj2k00 · F
The same people that say “if you don’t like the president, go to a different country” @PerchingDove
@Jj2k00 Yes, I guarantee it’s those exact ones. 😂
Rickg · 31-35, M
Oh silence
You cannot stand in the way of the great Idaho empire
Long live the potato!
twowheeledbird · 51-55, M
P.S....Oregon is a beautiful state....I try to get up there every few years. ...I'm in NV.
Ryannnnnn · 31-35, M
Didn't california want to do the same thing?
SW-User
@Ryannnnnn There's long been a proposal for parts of northern California to join with southern Oregon in a new rural conservative state called "Jefferson".

There have also been proposals to split California into several states. I even drew up my own proposal to split it into four states: Jefferson, California, Ohlone, and Ventura. But I love alternate geography, so I didn't come up with that for political reasons!
Livingwell · 61-69, M
Lol! There is a concept called “moving to another state”. 🤣
