I Live In Oregon

So there's a separatist group in my state petitioning to expand Oregon's borders to include Idaho and a piece of Northern California (because why not?) to create a "Greater Idaho" state. The group behind the petition are a group of conservatives claiming they are fed up living in a Democratic-majority state so instead of moving to another state, they wish to create a "super-conservative mega-state". 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️ Regardless of which side you're on politically, you have to admit that this is unbelievably stupid. As an Oregonian myself, this is straight-up embarrassing! Some states are majority Democrat, some states are majority Republican. That's just how it is! If you hate living in a state that's run by the party you're opposed to so much, you can always just move to another state. Or you can create a petition to move your state's borders to a neighboring state that's who your political alignment is the majority, out of complete disregard for those who would be effected and don't want the change, all so you can be happy! Excuse me, so you can maintain your rural values. For those conservatives who always make fun of liberals for being "snowflakes" all the time: what do you call this? 🙄

As an Oregonian, I can say that the frustration of living in a liberal state is great. Yet some of what you say is absolutely correct. I understand what drives the desire to propose changing state lines, but picking up and moving is likely the better choice if you lose all hope for the future.

The idea of being taxed as if I had unlimited income is disheartening and the fact that with certain bills looking likely to pass that have the potential to turn me from a law-abiding citizen into a potential felon just for exercising my rights as an American...

Wish the liberal mentality wasn't so focused on controlling the lives and lifestyles.

@sunrisehawk I live in a county that was Republican for 40 years. My husband and I pay incredible property and school tax living here. For most folks here, their property tax is more than their mortgage!

For the first time EVER, my county just booted out these conservatives that were running the show.

Both parties are guilty of this.

@Peapod Oregon has been essentially under the control of one-party for quite a long time. I tend to agree that both parties are guilty when in power for a long time, but here, it is the liberal's who have been running things for quite a while.

@sunrisehawk I can understand the frustration of living in any place where one party is in power and you feel gouged.

You know one can say the same about conservatives, right? Abortion laws? LGBT rights? This separation movement that would essentially force a change on those who don't want it if it were to happen?

@PerchingDove I don't know any conservatives who what to control LGBT or any other lifestyles. They just don't think they deserve special rights. Abortion, that is a complex issues as the unborn human is killed. But the criminalization of rights (free speech and more) is being done far more often by the left than the right.

It was more about how the "party" metamorphosed. Back when Oregon had a GOP Governor (Victor Atiyeh), he was the champion of environmental rights. It was back when conservatism, did not necessarily mean selling your kids' future.

Following the bow wave of the Reagan "revolution", Oregon voters, gradually, transferred their ideals to the party that most represent them, and that was not the GOP. The influx of technology companies and education, did not hurt either.

I do. Quite a few, in fact. But my point is conservatives are just as guilty of wanting to control people's lives as liberals are, whether they admit it or not.
sunrisehawk · 61-69, M
Okay, I tell you what I think, and you just reply with a blanket statement. I am conservative and don't want to control how anyone else lives their life. But you obviously disagree with me.
sunrisehawk · 61-69, M
@Northwest If that was the case, Oregon would be blue in the rural areas instead of only being dominated by the urban areas.
@sunrisehawk I didn't make any blanket statement. All I said was conservatives (didn't say all) are just as guilty of wanting to control people's lives as liberals are. You actually made more of a blanket statement than I did by saying "the liberal mentality". Guess generalizations are okay when they're against the left. Whatever.

@PerchingDove Apologize for offending you. Have a good day.
@sunrisehawk You didn't offend me, you just missed my point or refused to acknowledge it. But again, whatever.
