It's a term from black culture that has been taken into the mainstream. It refers to an awareness of social justice and in particular racial issues.
To some, Woke culture is an 'identity obsessed' movement 'fundamentally opposed' to free speech.

@helenS when we awakened in the late sixties it was about MORE free speech....[media=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28aPyBrP0Yc&ab_channel=PaulRichards]

It's simply about being aware of injustices within society; racism for example. Unfortunately it tends to be used incorrectly by a whole bunch of people who liken 'woke' to being 'too sensitive'.

@JosephineTheFox Please watch the video I posted. I remember that stuff from TV and then I was in college myself and I heard more and the hippie movement ensued and the anti-war movement merged with that.

Hear its supposed to be coming over here to the land of free speech.

@Senecaa If there are people of color there, it was always there. You were simply unaware—or not “woke”.

I wondered that, never had a convincing explanation, shrugged it off as yet another strange slang term in the USA's (so foreign to me) febrile domestic politics and got on with life!

I don’t have to look it up. I remember it as slang among African Americans for someone who understood and was aware about the history of oppression in the U.S. (and elsewhere) and how the fallout continues to affect people. We were using the term in the 70s but somehow people think it’s new. And they usually get it wrong.

It's that thing that condescending guilty white people demand everyone else gets on board with for fear of being cancelled
