Dear Similar Worlds:

What does the word "socialism" mean to you?

It's not an argument. I'm not going to even respond to a single comment left on this post if there are any.

I just wanna know. It's driving me crazy.

EDIT: Changed the title.

@Harriet03 I Agree! Bernie is NOT socialism!

@MrBlueGuy This is a great analogy!

You work together to solve social and infrastructure problems. This requires something called "organization" and "empathy". It also requires funding through taxes. As Bertrand Russel said, "Taxes are the price we pay for a sane society". In the near future, advanced earth based governments and all space based habitats will be socialist/communist as everything must be shared. Capitalism/fascism will be seen to be as quaint and outmoded as the imperial measurement system and will fade away as the wealthy few become outcasts.

To me socialism means an extension of human freedom, freedom from fear and from hunger, and finally freedom from governmental oppression. I can't see that socialism and conservatism are contradictory, and I don't think the free market fanatics are conservative. They are just greedy, and that's not a conservative virtue.
A lot of people seem to think that communism is the only form of socialism, without realizing that driving on public roads and calling 911 when their house is on fire is socialism too. Even insurance is a socialist concept, but you won't hear them about opting out of any of that.

I am from Canada, a nation that has recently gone full on "socialism". I am sort of new to the idea, so forgive me if I don't fully yet understand the entire scope of it, but as of so far, the government has taken away my job, is paying me just enough money to keep my rented home, and food in the fridge, but restricts my movements, and how I behave in public. So far, I'm not much of a fan.
@MougyWolf I think taking away your job and restricting your movements and behavior is part of handling the pandemic, not socialism. Only the getting to keep your house and having food part is socialism. If you don't like the help with that, you can of course go live on the street instead. Nobody forces you to accept the help you're offered.

Socialism is government control over its people. They are told how much money they can make, were to live & work. Only the government benefits from socialism. The American dream is to become successful, socialism makes everyone sheep of the government.
