Has this happened to anyone else? What did you do?

So I discovered my checking and savings accounts were drained over the weekend. I stopped my account... which only has about $30 left between the two now... and that's about all I can do for the time being until my bank opens tomorrow. 馃槵

I guess my question is what do I do in the future? Keep my money stuffed in the mattress? How do I stop it from happening again?

How was it drained? Unauthorized purchases, was your debit card stolen? Your money is insured and when you walk into your bank tomorrow to tell them you didn't do it, they will have to investigate it and give you back your money. I work in a bank and you wouldn't believe how much fraud there is these days.
SW-User
@dumpstermeow But they can get your credit card number to that savings account too. Unfortunately if they are going to hack us, it's going to happen. I don't pay at the pump, because I risk there being a skimmer on it. I rarely use ATMs, if I do it's at my bank because I know we have anti-skimmers on ours. Keep the daily limit on your cards low. I'm sorry, but I honestly don't know of a fool proof way to protect any of us, unfortunately.
dumpstermeow41-45, F
@SW-User I do all of that... thanks for your insight. It's frustrating but I know it'll be fine.
SW-User
@dumpstermeow I know it's frustrating. And I'm sorry I can't tell you just exactly how to not have it happen again.
chuck788261-69, M
It happened to me. I had been banking in a bank that had branches all over the US. I'm in New Jersey and someone in Georgia drained my account. Once I got my money back, I took it out of that bank and switched to a local bank. I really think the smaller the bank the less likely that is to happen
chuck788261-69, M
@dumpstermeow I never heard of that but if your dad thinks it's a good idea, it might be worth a try. I just think using a bank where someone from another state can use your account is a bad idea.
dumpstermeow41-45, F
@chuck7882 but what if I'm in another state? Can I still use it or get money?
chuck788261-69, M
@dumpstermeow I found a local bank that covers the ATM fees in out of state banks

[c=#BF0080]It sucks..Happened to be too.. 2xs.. I鈥檓 in NY and my checking was used up in Maryland and the other time it was used about 20mins away in each direction of me- the guys had a stack of cards, one with my info.. [/c]

My debit card was somehow skimmed at a gas station pin pad about a year ago. They got about 250 peoples banking/card info. Fortunately the bank only held me responsible for the first $50, but 50 damn dollars 馃槕. I was able to block the card from overdraft so I could only spend what was in checking at the time the card is used and the rest is in savings. I just have to remember to move money with my banking app on my phone.

Sorry that fucking sucks :(
SW-User
Open a separate savings account tomorrow that isn't linked in any way shape or form to the checking/savings account attached to the debit card. That savings account should be safe if you don't get a debit card attached to it, the only way to access it would be to go into your actual bank or online through your banks app/website. You can keep money in it safe from the outside world by going to the bank and transferring money to it from the main account. If your bank won't let you open a second account like this open this savings account at another bank. Sounds complicated but it's safe as long as there isn't a card attached to it.
dumpstermeow41-45, F
@SW-User I have a dedicated savings account for that purpose already under the same account. It was untouched.
SW-User
@dumpstermeow there you go then, move most of your money to it in the future.
Sepia36-40, F
Open a separate account used only for savings. Don't use it anywhere like online shopping or even at nearby department store. Try not to expose it as possible
dumpstermeow41-45, F
@Sepia I have one of those so they didn't get to my main savings, thank goodness.
tallpowerhouseblonde31-35, F
The bank has to give you the money back.
From now use a credit card. You see the statement before you pay the bill. For savings look for a fixed account which will prevent anyone accessing it.Mine are on certificates sent to me through the mail and the money is held in the account at a set rate for example 2.5 % for 3 years.I'm not a fan of internet banking it's not very secure.I use my credit card for everything and have an automatic payment from my current account to clear the balance. All my bills are paid direct debit.Once it's all set up it's easy.

@kodiac he's a good dude, that's all I know.
kodiac22-25, M
@dumpstermeow Yes but would u do him? lifelock is a service that can protect your stuff from being hacked
dumpstermeow41-45, F
@kodiac absolutely

If its a card with contactless technology they may have had an RFID scanner near your wallet/purse. There are ones you can buy that stops RFID scanners being able to get your card details.
dumpstermeow41-45, F
@SW-User I never pay attention... the guy at the bank said to cover my hand in the future. I'm just not going to use it as debit anymore.
FernieF
@dumpstermeow Why stop using it as debit? We all have to be diligent these days and ...cover our hands
dumpstermeow41-45, F
@Fernie then I don't have to use a pin at all. I'm also not using it unless the machine has a chip reader.
Myzery41-45, F
I am sorry that this has happened to you. I have not had it happen, but it is a rampant problem. You may have to file a police report. And, the bank may not be pleasant to work with.

I use a credit card for all purchases that I don't use cash for because I read that credit card companies are easier to deal with in this situation. Just a thought for future use.
ButterRobot51-55, M
It happened to my credit card. I stopped it and the bank lodged a dispute. I got it all back.
ButterRobot51-55, M
someone skimmed the card...either you used it in a restaurant and someone used a device to copy it or they fitted a device over the ATM to do that and capture your PIN number. Probably the latter.
dumpstermeow41-45, F
@ButterRobot I only ever use the atm at my bank...I don't see that being possible either.
ButterRobot51-55, M
You'd be amazed how ingenious they can be.

it happened to me about 10 years ago I just got diapers and formula for my 2nd daughter I went to use it to get groceries my debit card was deined cause some one took money out it took a while but I got my money back cause I was not liable for it
UndercoverBard31-35, M
Not much you can do. People have all sorts of ways to steal the card info or bank info in general. As long as your bank refunds you I wouldn't worry about it
dumpstermeow41-45, F
@UndercoverBard I'm mostly worried about what to do in the future. Where should I keep my money instead?
UndercoverBard31-35, M
@dumpstermeow Nowhere is completely safe honestly. Any sort of banking account runs the risk of being broken into. And keeping all cash could always be stolen from you. At least if it's stolen from a bank account there should be records of it and you should be reimbursed
tiggerandariel1341-45, MVIP
@dumpstermeow when they hacked my debit card I cancelled it and got my money out of my bank into another bank
ninjavu51-55, M
Happened to me too on a savings account. Got my money back fairly quickly, but had to wait a few weeks for the investigation into the first transaction. Then they gave me that back, as well as the other three transactions again! It's such a shit bank that I figure I'm owed at least that much for all the grey hair they've given me over the years, but I'm sure they'll figure out their mistake eventually. However, I'll leave the money in the account for now.

As for what you can do to stop it again, follow the security precuautions your bank tells you to. However, in the end, there are weaknesses in all systems, including the banking system.

Maintain an excel file call it my bank account. Record your collections and payments. Get the bank monthly statement and compare to your records. Highlight the differences. Have your bank explain the differences to you.
Jibby56-60, C
Change bank account cards every couple of months.and use a VPN service if you're doing anything over the computer or phone
dumpstermeow41-45, F
@Jibby I've never used it online for anything.
Jibby56-60, C
@dumpstermeow does your bank have an app where you can check in real time all transactions ,, I check my accounts a few times a day...its like coming to this site. Only more interesting

shouldn't the bank have known something wasn't right?

you just don't let your bank account number out to internet... get a new card
MartinTheFirst22-25, M
@dumpstermeow then you just suck...-_- jk

probably some waiter snagged the number as you payed
Orca495070-79, M
or you used it in an ATM or debit device that had a skimmer. Can't you call your banks lost card line and alert them to the issue?
Smikezz246-50, M
@dumpstermeow the scammers can install something into the atm that reads your pin and acct # when you use them. That's why it is easier and safer to use the tapchip on your debit card
