Has this happened to anyone else? What did you do?

So I discovered my checking and savings accounts were drained over the weekend. I stopped my account... which only has about $30 left between the two now... and that's about all I can do for the time being until my bank opens tomorrow. 馃槵

I guess my question is what do I do in the future? Keep my money stuffed in the mattress? How do I stop it from happening again?

How was it drained? Unauthorized purchases, was your debit card stolen? Your money is insured and when you walk into your bank tomorrow to tell them you didn't do it, they will have to investigate it and give you back your money. I work in a bank and you wouldn't believe how much fraud there is these days.

@SW-User they did it over 3 atm transactions from my savings and 1 from my checking, Friday and Saturday in the next state over.

@dumpstermeow Somewhere there must have been a skimmer on an atm or gas pump, or in store. Go in tomorrow and dispute the charges. Clearly you're not two states over, your bank should refund all you lost.

@SW-User my sister has had this happen to her before and they always got her money back. My question is what should I do in the future to prevent it... my dad says to open a savings account with a credit card company and never use a debit card for anything.

@dumpstermeow But they can get your credit card number to that savings account too. Unfortunately if they are going to hack us, it's going to happen. I don't pay at the pump, because I risk there being a skimmer on it. I rarely use ATMs, if I do it's at my bank because I know we have anti-skimmers on ours. Keep the daily limit on your cards low. I'm sorry, but I honestly don't know of a fool proof way to protect any of us, unfortunately.

@SW-User I do all of that... thanks for your insight. It's frustrating but I know it'll be fine.

@dumpstermeow I know it's frustrating. And I'm sorry I can't tell you just exactly how to not have it happen again.
