Do you appreciate abstract art?

Do you only like paintings, sculpture, etc. that is representative of something real or can you appreciate a work of art that is more about color or shape and isn't meant to "be" anything in particular?
I don't mind abstract art, but I don't automatically like all of it. For me to like it, it has to have interesting composition, and uses of colour, texture and technique. It has to have enough layers of complexity and depth to keep it interesting. If it's too simple I can take it in at a glance and soon get bored.

I prefer realism.

Having studied art, the first, and original, abstract artists, such as Klimt, Malevich and Kandinsky, were highly experienced in realism, and highly respected for their realistic work before they began to play with shapes and colors.

In one sense, I suppose I have a degree of snobbery toward abstract art. If the artist is incapable of painting or sculpting realistically, then, to me, it invalidates any childish scribbles they might have done in the abstract.

@4meAndyou There is a part of me that feels that way as well, especially in regard to atonal and contemporary classical music. If a composer can only compose pieces that sound like mashing random keys on the piano, I'm not particularly impressed. If they're capable of also writing music like Mozart and Tchaikovsky but don't do so because it would be reactionary and pastiche, that's a different matter.

@SW-User Agreed.
I prefer surrealism, like Dali.

@CereBellum I love surrealism, as well as the work of Picasso, which is still at least semi-representational. I find the likes of Rothko to be a bit dull.

Depends on the artist. I find Piet Mondrian really fascinating, especially when you see how his early, representational painting of fences, windmills, buildings, etc. evolved into his totally abstract later works focused on grid patterns. It was there all along!

I like paintings that look like photographs and photographs that look like paintings. Too many things pass for art these days

Used to love that in experimental films (Stan Brakhage) and music, musique concrete for example.

Reminds me of a comedy skit from my favorite comedian.
