There is Nothing Scarier than Nothing...

And I mean nothing! Absolutely nothing at all.

I invite you to imagine yourself facing what's in the image below:

You find yourself facing that very tunnel. You can't turn back and the only way to go is forward. The tunnel is long and it's dark with no visible end in sight. The only thing you can hear is the echo of your own footsteps. You'll get out of there eventually, but until then, you're all on your own traversing this passageway in pitch black darkness. But there is nothing to fear! Nothing is going to come out and attack you. There are no threats of any kind you need to worry about. You don't know this, of course, but that is all that awaits you. You have nothing to fear. Absolutely nothing. By the time you reach the end of that tunnel, even if you found yourself in some sort of perilous situation, that may very well still come as some relief than what you just went through: being left to whatever treacherous thoughts you had by not knowing what awaited you. Even danger may be better than nothing...

Why is nothing so scary? Because you simply don't know what to expect. There's a thing called sensory deprivation or perceptual isolation where one's senses are significantly reduced or outright ceased. Normally, this can actually be calming to a person, especially if its voluntarily induced. But in certain situations or over extended periods, it can be particularly daunting on the mind. It can induce panic, cause auditory/visual hallucinations and in some extreme cases, result in a logical human being losing their grip on reality altogether.

Now I know what you might be thinking: "that's fear of the unknown, not fear of nothing." Isn't it though? Going back to that long dark tunnel, let's say one finds their way out safely. In the end, they discover there really was nothing to fear after all, but that was still what made it so frightening. Perhaps if that tunnel was fully lit, it wouldn't be any better because the sheer lack of anything happening as they're walking for a long period of time would be just as unsettling.

We're all familiar with this sort of fear. It's what makes walking through the woods or down the streets at night so scary. Even moving through the safety and comfort of your own home in the dark can be unnerving. Call it what you will - fear of nothing or fear of the unknown - but there's no denying how terrifying pure nothingness can be.

So what would you rather find behind that door - a threat of some kind or just a dark room with nothing visible? Nothing at all...

Thanks for reading!
