Anyone had a blood test come back with too many red blood cells?

The doctor isn't really concerned (she says it might be dehydration) but she's doing repeat bloods in a fortnight. She also said not to Google it but I did 😭😭😭
Yes... I was at the stage of being referred to haematology before Covid19 kicked in.

Your doctor is right... don't worry about it at the stage that you are at. One abnormal result is nothing to worry about and there's no point in crossing bridges before you get to them.

By the time you next get tested, your results might be back to normal again, anyway.
@Starsandfire I don't know... I couldn't get an appointment at my preferred haematology department before Covid19 shut the department down and now I need to sort out a new referral to try again.

At times, I've been as worried about it as you are because what Google says is scary stuff... but, it's possible that we may both just need some warferin pills to sort it out - and I'm trying to cling to that idea until I'm told differently.

Of course, I know that sleep apnea could be a possibility for me since I had it as a child, but I will cross that bridge when I get to it.

@HootyTheNightOwl polycythemia vera is rare though and even rarer in under 60s sooo it would be unlucky 🙁
@Starsandfire Yeah, I'm thinking that, too.

Two people I know had that condition. The first was the ex. He went to an endocrinologist who gave him Androgel, which was a testosterone patch, and it caused his blood to thicken up with too many red cells. He had to have his blood drawn regularly until he decided to quit the treatments.

The second person who had the condition had polycythemia vera, which is a pre-cancerous condition. People with that disease could, potentially, develop leukemia. But they might not. Usually they are placed under the care of an oncologist, and they have their blood drawn once a month.

My friend who had polycythemia vera no longer has it...which is very weird. He developed lung cancer, went through chemo and radiation, and the polycythemia vera just disappeared. His blood is normal now.

@4meAndyou I have pcos which I think increases testosterone? Might be that. Hoping it isn't the second 🙁

@Starsandfire Elevated testosterone can cause it...that's for sure. It seems like that's probably what is causing it...but drink more water, too.

@SW-User I'm making coffee, so I guess I'm doing a similar thing to myself without even intending to! 😱😂

Nope, but my white blood cell count has been four times higher than normal in a blood test or two. 😬😂

Polycythemia Vera? Likely you don’t have that ... drink more water! 😉.
Starsandfire · 31-35, F
@TexChik hope not, that was the first thing I saw when I googled! The rest of my bloods are fine anyway.

@Starsandfire you would have had a lot of abnormal cells ... they would have ordered a bone marrow biopsy had they suspected it . 🤗🤗 you’re going to be fine .
It is scary to self diagnose. Most people will come across a possible list of what they could have and automatically pick the worst option :(
